This is a follow up to the post I wrote last week about Eva and her hemangioma.
I spent Friday night putting a little awareness book together for her to take to school.
I meant to scan it but forgot to before I laminated it so please bear with me and the awful photographs I took.
A few photos, some cardstock and the printer.
Took it to get laminated and bound at the local stationary store and voila.
A personalized hemangioma awareness book.
Simple and to the point.
Hopefully it helps her nursery schoolmates understand a little bit better.
Hopefully it takes some of the curiosity off of her and she won’t have as many questions about it everyday.

Yes! I remember it being very hot and miss that too. I used to wonder if her arm felt colder there during the winter with all that heat being released. 🙂 Now that she is 2 and people ask HER what happened, she tells them in the saddest voice, “awww, I have an owie”. I smile and tell her “that’s not an owie, silly. That’s your pretty arm” and then I tell the person that asked it’s just her birthmark. My daughter never notices her arm until someone brings it to her attention. 🙂

Christine – you are one incredible mom. This is proactive and powerful and in the language of a child. Perfection!!! Well done. See how our children choose the right parents!? xn

That is absolutely awesome, Christine. You’re a superstar for getting that book together so quickly to help Eva explain things and class. And Eva’s just a superstar!!!

What an awesome idea. I have two hemangiomas on my left bicep area. I constantly got asked questions growing up about them. For a very long time, they were swollen, puffy, and bright red. Now that I’ve gotten older, they have faded some, but they are still there.
I’m sensitive about them and always wear shirts with sleeves long enough to cover them. I wish I would have had something to explain what they were when I was younger.

What a great idea, and very well done. You are such a great momma!

I think that’s a really great idea.

Thanks so much everyone!
Her teacher said it went over wonderfully – and that Eva was very proud to have her book read to the class. They’re going to keep it there for a few more days.
mommabird2345 – It’s so true – I have always known that I will miss it when it’s gone. It used to be VERY hot with all the blood in it and we called it her hotspot. It’s not hot anymore and I sometimes miss the heat on my lips when I kiss her.

Oh, this is soooooo good, lady. Kids need all the information they can bear to understand things – making it more “tactile” was such a great idea. Terrific little Miss you have there… wow.

What a wonderful way to address ‘Manny’!
I think it’s key to explain things to kids, rather than teach them “Oh, you mustn’t look, you mustn’t ask questions”. Kids are born to look and born to ask questions, and as soon as they stop, we should be worried. Taking the mystery and the intrigue out of Manny will help Eva’s friends to understand, and soon, they won’t see Manny any more, just as I’m sure you don’t.
And just as a little sidenote, Eva is GORGEOUS! Those blonde ringlets? WOW!
Her Mum is pretty awesome too!

That’s a great idea! My youngest has a hemangioma on her left arm & on her tummy. They are just part of her and I don’t even notice them anymore, but I can’t tell you how many times people have seen it and said “What happened to her arm?!?”. She is 2 1/2 now & it is almost gone. I know this might sound strange but, I’m going to miss it when it is.

This is so perfect. Good for you for teaching her it’s ok to be a little different. She is so adorable.

Love it!

This is so wonderful. I remember telling people that no, we did not need to photoshop the hemangioma out of pictures of our first daughter. She had a half-dollar sized “manny” on her forehead until she was about 18 months old.
Special kids!

That’s perfect! I think that educating her classmates is very important and this way she can do it herself. Yay, Mom!!

AMAZING! Great way to show her friends that she’s a-ok.

You are AWESOME. I love this.

That is fabulous!
Sara says
The book is AWESOME!! I can tell you guys how proud Eva was to show it to me on the weekend. I’m sure all the other kids will want a book of their own …
Jen says
Perfect, Christine. Not too much information but enough to help them understand that Eva has her “manny” but is otherwise just like them.
