A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore
Available September 8, 2009
Set just after the events of September 2001, it is a story about Tassie Keltjin, a twenty-year-old making her way in a new world and coming of age. Tassie is a “smile-less” girl from the plains of the mid-west. She has come to a university town, her brain on fire with Chaucer, Sylvia Plath, and Simone de Beauvoir. In between semesters, she takes a part-time job as a nanny for a family that seems mysterious and glamorous to her. Though her liking for children tends to dwindle into boredom, Tassie begins to care for, and protect, their newly adopted little girl as her own. As the year unfolds, she is drawn even deeper into the world of the child and her hovering parents, and her own life back home becomes alien to her. As life reveals itself dramatically and shockingly, Tassie finds herself forever changed — less the person she once was, and more and more the stranger she feels herself to be.

Mathilda Savitch by Victor Lodato
Available September 15, 2009
Fear doesn’t come naturally to Mathilda Savitch. She prefers to look directly at things nobody else can even mention: for example, her beloved older sister’s death. She was pushed in front of a train by a man who is still on the loose, and after a year of searching for clues, Mathilda has come no closer to the truth about Helene’s murder…until she cracks her email password and a whole secret life emerges — one that swiftly draws Mathilda into her sister’s world of clouded motives and strange emotions. If she can find the keys to Helene’s past, she’s sure she can wake her family from their nightmare of grief. But in crossing into that underworld and tracing her sister’s footsteps, she has to risk everything that matters to her.

An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon
Available September 22, 2009
Readers have been waiting with bated breath for the seventh volume in bestselling author Diana Gabaldon’s epic Outlander saga — a masterpiece of historical fiction featuring Jamie and Claire, from one of the genre’s most popular and beloved authors. Jamie Fraser, erstwhile Jacobite and reluctant rebel, knows three things about the American rebellion: the Americans will win, unlikely as that seems in 1778; being on the winning side is no guarantee of survival; and he’d rather die than face his illegitimate son — a young lieutenant in the British Army — across the barrel of a gun. Fraser’s time-travelling wife, Claire, also knows a couple of things: that the Americans will win, but that the ultimate price of victory is a mystery. What she does believe is that the price won’t include Jamie’s life or happiness — not if she has anything to say. Claire’s grown daughter Brianna, and her husband, Roger, watch the unfolding of Brianna’s parents’ history — a past that may be sneaking up behind their own family.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Available October 6, 2009
Another brilliant, original and moving novel from the author of The Time Traveler’s Wife.
Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers — normal, at least, for identical “mirror” twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn’t know existed has died and left them her amazing flat in a building by Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin … but they have no idea that they’ve been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the OCD-suffering crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt’s mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the mother of the girls — her own twin — and who can’t even seem to quite leave her flat….

Autumn is an inbetween time of year. The work of summer’s garden is past and the winter with holidays to prepare for is yet to come. The days are precious and have become a special time to enjoyreading. The season encourages snuggling under a blanket on the porch letting the pages of a book take me away for a mental holiday.
Kelly says
I have 3 kids, but my favorite thing to do on Sunday morning is to stay in bed & read!!! I love to “escape” from the real world for acouple of hours!!!
Tova says
There’s nothing like curling up in bed, with the yummy, warm comforter pulled up around my waist and a great book to read. Warm and cozy, my favorite things!
Lina says
After a hectic week choufering, grocery shopping, house work, preparing meals,
homework assignments (mine – I’m going to night school to get my “educational assisstant diploma) and did I mention I also work during the day! Whew!
I look sooo forward to immersing myself in a good book and forgetting about the world around me! What goes with a great book – a strong cup of coffee, and an amazing autum view right from my backyard on a Saturday morning when everyone is still asleep!
Sarah says
I stopped reading when I got pregnant (attention span went out the window!) and couldn’t read when my son was first born (um, feeding every three hours…thank you very much!). Now that I finally have time to myself, I devour books like I haven’t eaten in weeks. I almost forgot how much I love to read
dasing says
In the fall I like to read a good book in front of the fireplace.
Tracy F says
I love curling up with a good book because it would mean that the kids are napping and I have a little bit of time to indulge and escape into the world in the novel. It’s especially yummy when it’s a cool fall day and I’m cuddled in with a fresh cup of tea.
annabelle DeGouveia says
Escape Escape Escape Escape…. that is everything.
Tammy says
I love curling up with a book on an autumn day, because autumn is a time to wind down and prepare for winter. After the manic pace of summer and before the insanity of Christmas it is nice to lose yourself for a while in a fantasy world where you have no cares (or at least none that won’t be wrapped up by the last page!)
tyke says
Nothing more relaxing that some coffee, my cat, my blankey and a good book on a cool evening!
Jacquie Hess says
I like to read and the books featured in your contest look very interesting.
tasosgirl says
I have chronic pain and a degenerative eye disease. I enjoy relaxing and living in the moment. Reading helps me to do just this.
sylvia says
thank you for the opportunity to win this great contest
pish says
I love it when the weather turns yuckier…then when I curl up with my book I don’t have any lingering guilty thoughts about missing a nice summer’s day outside, ha.
michelle k says
One of the best things about fall is curling up with a good book under a blanket with the crisp fall air coming in the windows. When the days get shorter I love getting totally lost in a book while curled up on the couch. I can forget about everything else and just completely immerse myself in it. These selections look amazing for fall!!
Lisa says
Just this morning, I woke my youngest son with a little song about how he was all curled up in his bed. From his curly head to his curly toes.
Curling up with a book on a Fall day, curling up with a cup of hot tea, curling up with a warm blanket and fuzzy slippers – these are the things of fond memories. A chance to curl into a story, to meet new characters, to stroll new storylines and to visit new places.
When we can, my children and I curl up together – we read together and talk about our favourite books. As the weather cools, as the leaves turn, as shorts give way to long pants, and light breezy summer sandwiches give way to hearty stews, curling up with a good book is a full-family-warming activity.
dixbay says
Although I enjoy books throughout the year, fall is my favourite season to snuggle up and get lost in a good book. The sound of the wind blowing, the changes in light due to clouds zipping past, the smell of fresh dirt from the potato farmers field, the sound of silence in the house, sometimes when I do finally look up I quickly realize that I am not wherever the book takes me but home and that it nearly dark outside and time to get supper on. For me there is no better way to relax and shake off the blues than reading. Whatever the season or book I (almost) always feel better when the book is finally laid down.
cwilman says
Nothing better that a throw, a hot cuppa tea and a good book when there is a nip in the air.
Lisa Doucette says
There is nothing better than curling up with a good book on a beautiful fall day, when I get the chance. With the busy days raising two children, nap time is a wonderful thing!!! I love to read my books/novels outside in the sun light just listening to mother nature and of course no screaming children…:)
Flo says
I like to curl up with a good book on a Fall day because by the fall I got all my garden and yard work done. I don’t feel guilty snuggling under a blanket with a good book when the weather turns cold. The Fall is a good time to get into Reading .
juliebumboolie says
I love curling up with a great book in the Fall (especially the cold, rainy days of November) because I needn’t feel guilty about missing any gorgeous weather outside!
legsmom says
As a mom to three active and busy boys books are my purse stapple. Some ladies need to have their makeup bag, some need to have face blotters or a perfume, but not me, I NEED A BOOK!
With the fall on our doorstep, my time will be spent shuffling the boys to the soccer club for training, or the youngest one to Irish dancing. Sitting for two hours at a time while they train for soccer (5 days a week between the two older ones, often more) or twice a week dance class I can’t always count on conversations to while the time away so I pack a book. I go through my fazes, mushy girly books are after hard to read thought provoking books, which come after self help/ parenting books. And then I cylce back to my brain cleanser girly books.
Many of the moms trade books around, offering up the newest read, or their old book club books. I look forward to the fall and the new adventures that my emotions will take from reading a great book.
Christina says
I love curling up with a book any day of the year. Especially if I just need to get away from real life.
Karen Kelly says
As a busy working mom with a 4.5 and 6 year old sometimes it seems like there is no “me” time. But curling up with a book on a cool fall night after everyone is in bed can be a lifesaver. I can rush away to another place, another day, another time. The lunches will still need to be made and the permission forms signed. But after a little time for me I seem to do it all a little better.
spice_43 says
I love crisp fall days when I can curl up in my window seat an cuddle with my dog while enjoying a good book. Some people love the smell of a new car, but for me there is nothing more exhilirating then opening the cover of a new book with its crisp spine and clean pages….
Dawn says
Fall is my favorite time of year, curling up with a great book and a roaring fire, while a pot a stew cooks in the oven is just my idea of heaven. And the colder outside the better, just a good excuse the stay cuddled up inside. I feel ready for it after the long hot days of summer. I am so glad I live in a location that we get to experience the 4 seasons. So everyone just leave me alone and let me read my new books.
Andree B says
Fall: fuzzy blanket + fuzzy slippers + hot cup of coffee + a good book = Happy and Relaxed Mommy!
Colleen Harnish-Trottier says
It is just such a nice getaway to find a special spot to curl up and escape for just a while within pages of a good book.
thomas rusinak says
love to read myself to sleep
Tamara says
As a mom, there isn’t a lot of time for reading, so I cherish the time I get and make a big deal of it. In the fall, I love to sit in the yard in the big muskoka chairs with a book and a coffee. If I have the time to light the fire-pit, then I’ll do that to, it just adds to the ambiance!
MamiG says
There’s something nostalgic about the fall. Wether it’s the colours, crisp air, cozy wardrobe or getting back into the school/every day routine, as a mother (and I’m sure as most women) I cherish the quiet times to myself. Let’s face it, they’re rare 🙂 And what better way to enjoy it than to sit on the veranda with a blanket, glass a wine and a hard-to-put down novel! That is, until the 2 y/o wakes up to go potty….
supercoopermom says
Ahhh fall, my absolute favourite time of the year. The cool nights, the sunny days, the apples and the pumpkins. As the nights get longer somehow it feels more “okay” to sit down on the couch after the dishes are done and the babies are put down, tuck my feet under me, grab a cushion, put on my reading glasses(after 40, watch out!), and settle in for a reading adventure of some sort. I’m transported, inspired, challenged, and poked by authors various and sundry. I love it.
Kelly says
I love reading novels! When summer’s here there just isn’t enough time to sit down and enjoy it. The cooler weather seems to slow things down for me and that’s when I like to pull out a book to read. Reading takes my mind off everyday things and lets me use my imagination to the fullest! Sometimes I like to pretend that I’m a certain character in the book and try to guess what they’re going to do next. I didn’t have much of a childhood when my parents were still together and I didn’t have a lot of friends either but I could always turn to my books for comfort. It was like I was in my own little world and nothing could take me away from it! Now that I’m older I like to read because I want to not because I have to.
Susan K says
I can’t sign in, no idea why 🙂
I love to curl up with a good novel especially in the Fall because in the Fall I need comfort. This is the coziest activity I know, especially when accompanied by a nice pot of tea beside me, and me bundled in a comfy throw.
Angela says
I love to curl up with a good book no matter where I am, but especially at home in my favourite chair with a nice hot latte – I look forward to that time of the day every single day! I also love the message it sends my kids about reading and how enjoyable it can be.
tina werner says

I love curling up on the couch with my favorite afghan, and a hot cup of herbal tea and reading a great book.fall is my favorite time of the year it would be great to win some of these books.
Heidi says
Curling up with a good book is an escape like no other. A whole new world comes alive on those small black & white pages.
Autumn is the perfect season for these “me moments”. The windows are open with a light breeze coming in. The smell of damp leaves and someone burning the crunchy ones down the road drifts in. Perfect!
Jeannette B says
In the Fall it’s dark so early that I don’t get outside evening playtime with the kids. As a single mom of a baby and a toddler, if they can’t be outside, most days neither can I so indoors time starts early. Books are such a great escape into other worlds, magically transporting you somewhere for a short time of adventure. I would love to add more books to my collection as it would be great to have new adventures once my little ones are tucked away safely in bed.
Emma says
It’s a treat anytime of year to be able to read a book with 2 small kids around. Looking forward to reading more this fall.
Sandra Schultz says
I’d love to curl up and read a book in front of the fireplace. For me, reading is a de-stressor. And being a stay at home mom to two young daughters means not much time to do that. It’s a great alternative to vegging in front of the tv.
Louise says
Curling up with a good book in any season is how I let go of day to day stress. Doing so in the fall is particularly rewarding because the season itself has a more relaxed feel to it that just naturally lends itself to quiet hours immersed in a well-written story.
Catherine Casper says
I love curling up with a book on a chilly fall day because it brings back memories of my childhood. I’ve always been an avid reader and I would read indoors or out if the weather permitted. Fall is my favorite season- not hot and beautiful to see and smell!
Dianne says
Once it gets cold and snowy outside I don’t get out much but I can pick up a book and read about far away places and escape. I love curling up on the couch with a warm drink, wrapped in a blanket reading a great book.
Sherriemae says
Fall is our family’s favorite time of year, so much so that we actually condsidered naming our daughter Autumn (Andie won). Reading is my treat to myself, my usual goal is one book a year..I know that sounds very limiting but we three little ones under 5 running around, it is hard to keep up with thier daily reading let alone my own. Paradise for me, is a cool Fall day curled up in the hammock at the cottage while my hubbie and the kids fish off the dock, I may only get 15 minutes at a time but I cherish those few minutes and suprizingly am able to escape into the book effortlessly the next time I have a spare 15 minutes.
ebickell says
There’s nothing better than a cozy evening with a book and a cup of tea in the fall. When the cold rain and wind are whipping around, it’s so nice to have a mini escape! Reading takes me away.
Catherine says
I love curling up with a book on a fall evening as the evenings get shorter and cooler. While during long summer nights I am more likely to be enjoying the evening on the patio, come September by teacher-husband has lesson planning and marking to do in the evenings and I find I have more time to fill by myself. I love making myself a cup of tea and getting back to my (very long) reading list.
jazzy005 says
Love to curl up on my couch in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate by my side and a good book. Find it very relaxing to get caught up in a good story and forget about everything but the book I’m reading.

Tania says
Fall is the best time to curl up with a great book. My hubby takes the kids outside for a walk, or to rake up leaves (only to jump into them and scatter them everywhere again, lol) and I get my “Mommy time”. A hot cup of tea, a polar fleece blanket, a good book and of course, a comfy spot on the couch and I am all set! And don’t forget to shut off the phone! With all of that, it’s time to lose myself in another world … even if it is only for a few hours! 🙂

I love curling up with a book anyday! Why? Because when I read I can go anywhere in the world, be transported to any point in time (including the future), meet characters that I would not have otherwise met, be introduced to points of view other than my own, increase my vocabulary – the list goes on! And all this for only a few cents per page!
Idas says
As a full-time stay at home parent, sometimes I miss my old life, the freedom to travel for business, the chance to meet someone interesting person by fate somewhere off the beaten track.
Reading opens a small view into something different during a time period where our lives can be ruled by routines that consider us last.
Fall is when life for me slows down just a little with now my youngest in morning drop-off programming. So stepping into a different place or seeing a new perspective means a breath of much needed mental space.

I like to read at my trailer in the fall. I sit on the deck and feel the wind on my face as I read and sometimes look at the changing colour of the leaves. It’s always so peaceful in the fall as it’s usually just the seasonal campers who remain and it’s so quiet.

Jen says
Reading is my most important “me time” activity. I always make sure I get a bit of reading in every day, even if it’s only 15 minutes before bedtime. This Fall I’m especially looking forward to curling up with my kindergartener and toddler to read together. There’s nothing better than getting cozy under a blanket and cuddling and reading together!

I have had my passion with books re-ignited with the introduction of a mommy book club in my group of friends. Best thing ever. Glass of wine, warm blanket, comfy chair by the fireside – this is what relaxing as a mom in autumn is all about.

My idea of heavenly bliss would be to spend a month undisturbed, reading, eating, and sleeping in a bookstore, filled to the rafter with books galore. I love curling up with a good book on a fall day because it feels like home. Nothing feels better than having a fantastic story to take you away from your day-to-day troubles and worries and to be sitting looking outside as it’s getting a little gloomy and cold. It makes me feel warm inside and out.

I like curling up with a good book on a fall day because it transports me away from the mundane. Dishes, laundry and dusting are temporarily forgotten as new worlds and characters open up in the pages of a good book.

All five authors are wonderful, and this would be an excellent package for cool fall days.

I love to read… I read as though books are going out of style soon! 🙂 And fall is the best time to read, in some ways, because you can still read outside under a tree when the weather is perfect, or curl up inside and be cozy when the weather isn’t so agreeable…

I love curling up with a book on a fall day because it’s good for the soul. A cup of tea, a great read and a cozy blanket on a cool, autumn day warms me like nothing else!

We are so lucky to live in a country that has a fall season.
How could you not just love a season that is so full of color,
full of juicy apples and crisp weather!! It’s a season that truly
deserves a good book.

OK, I have to admit, I have memories of curling up with books….I think. It’s been so long I can’t remember. Does curling up with your child for bedtime stories count? While perhaps my reading selections have changed, the love of curling up with books has not. I’m glad my daughter is picking up on this love too.

I’ve recently joined a book club (first meet up is next week!) and so I have no excuses anymore but to take the time to sit down & enjoy a great novel. I’m looking forward to the many books that are already on the list throughout the winter months, but I still need to come up with a title for March. I’m sure I’d be able to find something in this great prize pack!

A good book is my guilty escape from reality and I enjoy it even more in the fall with a fire when it is raining outside. Hot chocolate or a glass of merlot finish it off.
Shelly says
Wow, sound very interesting reads. With my youngest starting grade 1 I will have more time to read 🙂

I really enjoying curling up with a good book anytime of the year. But in the fall it is especially nice to read a good book curled up in my comfy chair, sipping some hot tea, enjoying my favourite scent of candle, when I have some alone time in the house. I love the escape that a good book provides.

Fall is the time when things get back in to order. The kids are back to school and on a schedule. The house is no longer in mayhem. Finally some me time. A time to curl up to a good book and not have to keep putting the book mark in every two minute. Life is good.
Christine says
Curling up with a good book is great anytime. But, there’s something about the cold wind blowing outside and the warmth of the crackling fire (real or otherwise)that makes reading a book magical. I curl up with a hot tea and a blanket. It brings me back to that safe feeling from childhood. In this world of uncertainty, it means a great deal to me to have that peace.

The fall is when things are back in order. The kids are in a routine. The house is not mayhem. I finally get to relax and have some me time. For me, that means curling up to a good book. Life is good.

In the fall I love to slip into the hammock at the lake, wrapped in a cosy blanket, and read. I love the smell of the forest, the quiet of the lake (without boats), and the freshness of the air.

I read everything from cereal boxes at breakfast to toothpaste tubes when I brushing my teeth because I just love to read. These days I seem to be rereading some of my favorites. Curling up with a book is the best way to relax after a long day of work and family. I would love to win these new books to curl up on the couch with this fall. We just moved to Calgary from Toronto so I hear the cold weather is coming soon. New books might just be the ticket if I can’t rely on those Chinooks!!

There is nothing more relaxing then to curl up on an autumn Sunday afternoon and escape into a novel where I can forget about the busy week ahead. It is a great rest for the soul.

I love to do get right into a novel on a cool day, curled up on the deck. It helps me have a “mini” getaway, without going anywhere. LOVE IT!!!!

I teach English Literature and I am always looking for new books to introduce to my high school students. I am currently on a maternity leave and I miss reading on a daily basis. In the fall, I love to curl up by the fireplace at night with a good book to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I think it is extremely satisfying to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea, while it is raining and gloomy outside. Something I always do in the fall.

Fall is my favourite time of year…the crisp air, falling leaves, kids back to school. I love to sit in my chair with the sun streaming in the window and read a good book. My husband teases me about having 2 or 3 books on the go at once. I can’t help it…I love to read!
Michele says
There is nothing like taking time out for yourself and escaping into another world with a good book and a hot cup of tea. Fall reminds us to slow down and enjoy the cool weather and gives us the excuse to stay inside and relax, even if for only a few minutes. And what a great way to set an example for your kids!

I agree that it’s the best to curl up on a fall or winter day with a great book. I love to climb in bed with a book and cup of tea and read for as long as I want. I find that this is an especially enjoyable treat, now that I have children and have so little time to myself.

Reading a good novel is the easiest way to give myself “me time”. The kids go out with their dad for a few hours and I can pick a spot anywhere in the house to curl up and read.

I think curling up with a good book is one of the greatest joys in life. Especially now that I am a full time Librarian and a full time Mom, my time is precious. During the fall there is nothing better than curling up with a good book while the window is open and you can smell the fresh autumn breeze while you escape into a different world.

Love being curled up and cozy with a book when the fall weather turns icky. A cup of tea, some jazz music, it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It refreshes the mind and rejuvenates the soul.

I love to curl up on a fall day with a great novel. I love to read outside with a cup of hot chocolate. Especailly in the early evening when the sky is turning those lovely shades of pink and red. It is a great way to wind down after the kids are in bed. It is perfect ‘me time’.

The only thing I like about fall IS curling up with a good book and mug of cocoa. Nothing is better than knowing I’m snug indoors and I can let the story carry me away. Sometimes I’m surprised when I look up and realize I’m at home!

I like curling up with a good book on a fall day because its is so nice to just have the windows open and the smell of autumn to waken the senses and the imagination when reading. Its almost like a blank canvas that gets its first stroke. I just love it… especially reading books that have a fall setting.
