we can do it

Finally, the warmer weather. I love the moment when I know it is “safe” to change my glass storm door to my screen door.

It is like I know it is finally warm enough to leave the door open day and night and let the breeze in. I know people will easily drop in for a popsicle, an ice cream  or a cold beer. I know going outside just  means flip flops. Everything is green and beautiful. It smells like hope.
But  changing these doors actually makes me think of something else too.
Just after I separated, a close friend dropped by and I was just about to switch the doors. She stepped on the porch and it was buckling from a rough winter. She turned to me and my daughters and said “We’ll get a bunch of the neighbourhood dads over to help fix all this stuff and change the door”
My oldest – then 11 – jumped in; ” We don’t need any help, we can do it.”
Truth is we have needed all the help we can get but I just LOVED that she said this. My friend almost started to cry and has never forgotten it.
It is amazing what we can do when we have to.
Excuse me now. I have to go change the front door. It is not a big deal but it always makes me smile.

You totally CAN do it. Good for her for knowing it – and you, for obviously teaching her that.
