New York = Great Food

June 30, 2010 by vweiss

The theme of the day was FOOD. Is that a big surprise?

I started off the day with a visit to the Plaza Food Hall, by Todd English. (thanks to a tweet from @Spotlightcity that I had read a month ago)

For $6 I had the BEST cheese plate. It was the perfect way to start my morning. I wish I could start of everyday with a breakfast like this.

Then I went to the Farmers Market at Union Square. As you know I have been to a few farmers markets lately (just a few…) but this one was spectacular.

To begin with it’s massive. I have no idea how many vendors but there are PLENTY. I believe I walked around for 2 hours (or more) but who was counting. I was in my element!!

As I wandered thru each vendor I noticed a few interesting vegetables that I have never seen before.

Then I went to Essex Market and roamed around the building. Found a great cheese vendor and chocolate. More happiness.

In the afternoon, I spent time visiting the Hester Street Fair where I discovered AVOCADO ice cream, and heavenly macarons. I was jumping up and down.

I have to be honest..I had to throw out half the ice cream and half the tiny macaron cause I was saving up for my trip to the Doughnut Plant!! I was told to have the Dulce Leche and indeed that’s what I had. There are NO words to describe this donut. (sorry Tim Hortons).

But the hightlight of my day was really the JELLO MOLD COMPETITION. I know what you are thinking “she is NUTS”.

Jello Mold Competition

Jello Mold CompetitionIt was held in this kewl space and it was brilliant event. There were probably a dozen or so entrants and each design was better than the next.

If you were wondering “how did Vicky even find out about this event”…well, here is your answer. I was in bed early the nite before, flipping thru those NY Tourist Magazines that they put in your hotel room.

I saw the ad and said to myself “Now that sounds like fun”.

The cups on the photo (to the left) are made of jello!! They called it  “jelloware”. The creators were these lovely recent graduates of Parsons.

The photo on the right is a blouse made with jello. How brilliant!!

I like being adventerous. Can you tell?

My day was truly spectacular.

Everybody is for freedom of religion, until it’s something they don’t like.

Why is Creating a Mosque at Ground Zero indeed being allowed to happen? I have never heard anything so quite brainless in all of my entire life. If this really arrives at actuality, It will likely to be the worst thing ever in your life. aileen
