Last week I was out with my girlfriends when Sean sent me an email with “Happening Right Now” as the subject and this in the body:
The reason this photo was email worthy is because Cuyler has ever had any interest in riding a bike.
He didn’t have the gross motor ability to pedal much less the coordination to steer while pedaling.
Last week, out of nowhere he rolled his bike out of the garage, snapped on his helmet and off he went with Sean following behind.

Since that day he and Sean have gone on a bike ride every night (weather permitting).
Last night he sat on his bike for about 30 minutes with his helmet on, patiently waiting for Sean to come home so they could go on their bike ride.
I would have taken him but Eva was in bed. Also – I do not have a bike.

I wasn’t sure we’d ever see him ride a bike. I love watching him push through the tricky part of pedaling (perhaps a bigger bike might help with that?). Before he would just give up and get off the bike. Now he works hard to do it.
We were thinking that since he’ll be turning 10 in the fall, perhaps we could try him without his training wheels toward the end of summer. Cuyler has other ideas…
Oh silly, silly Cuyler!
I can’t wait until I post about his training wheels coming off.

Hooray Cuyler!!!
Man, all in good time with our wee (big) love. He does just decide to do things “one day”, doesn’t he? I’m looking at Pedal Heads for Marley, it’s a bike camp. It’s so cute watching them from behind, a bit sad too, the first time. Onwards and up, you guys…

He can sort of pedal a trike. It’s hit or miss; it depends on the size of the trike.
Christine, you have no idea how much it warms my heart to read about the things your little boy is doing. It gives me unbelievable hope for my little guy.
Thank you so much.

Can he pedal a tricycle?
Cuyler could pedal a tricycle just fine. A trike was so much easier for him to pedal when the pedals were out in front of him.
It’s so much harder with the pedals under him, but he is finally doing it.
If this kid has taught me anything it’s never say never.
NEVER give up hope.
He is doing all the things we thought he would never do. He’s just on a different timeline that most.

Yes – we’re thinking a longer stride will help with pedaling. Tough to get a big bike with appropriate sized training wheels tho.

This is such a huge deal. My son with ASD has never really been able to pedal so we got him a stride bike (he’ll be 5 in August), but we’re thinking about getting him a regular one soon.
This gives me such hope. Thanks for sharing and go Cuyler!
