This year I have once again been given the honour of being permitted to buy my kiddies Halloween costumes. They were all gracious enough to wait until the last week of September before dragging me to the stores in search of the “Perfect” costume. You would think with so many children there would be costumes floating around from previous years – and there are, but of course this year they are “out” “too small” and “ruined” therefore, new ones need to be brought in.
So off I went with five excited children a bored 13 year old, and hungry twins. Arielle who just turned 8 informed me she wanted a Monster High costume. I told her to knock herself out and go find one. She did. She showed me. I wanted to knock out the person who designed the damned thing. What is going on? Since when is Halloween the okay day/night to dress our daughters up so inappropriately? She is 8 not 18! This is the costume she showed me:
I have had enough issues with this child already and don’t really need to add sexually provocative to the list as well thank you. I told her it wasn’t exactly appropriate and asked her to please find another Monster High outfit that covered a bit more of her body. “besides” I explained, “you don’t want to freeze while trick or treating.” She went searching, and I continued to be disgusted at what I was seeing. Did you know that you can’t dress up as a witch without looking like a prostitute?
You can’t be a Kitty unless you are a sexy one? Whatever happened to costumes such as Princesses, cute kitty’s, monsters, and witches that were not so attractive and scary? It is bad enough that our children are no longer so innocent by the time they reach the ripe ol’ age of 11 or 12 but do we really have to take away our younger children’s innocence just because it is Halloween?
She found another costume and showed me. I exchanged it for one that was a few sizes bigger. At least the dress would go past her knees and I will make sure she wears pants under it – not nylons, and she will wear running shoes – not heels.
What are your thoughts on Halloween costumes? Would you let your daughter wear some of these costumes? Whats the most outrageous costume you have seen?
Until next time,
Chantel Momof8crazymonkeys
I love Holloween now. It was boring when we did it in the 50’s. Now I get dressed up to hide my identity, sit on my porch, cut a hole in the bottom of a pumpkin bucket, fill it with candy, and put my cock inside for all the little 8 year old whores to grab while getting candy. America has never been better!
The top costume is scary to see on someone so young. Thankfully my kiddo is going as the queen of hearts ..we found a long ball gown, high collar, long sleeves, nice and warm for a cool evening. Actually Winners had alot of very long and well covered up, but still girly and cute costumes. I actually saw a beautiful Japanese kimono style outfit that I wished she had liked.
I am not sure when a girl picks out a costume like the one on top that they are thinking “oh that is sexy”….I think they are just emulating a character on tv. It is us as adults which are horrified. And keeping that in mind the characters they are emulating 9 times out of 10 are teen characters on these shows…I mean it is Monster High and not Monster Middle School.
Not saying I approve of the costume nor would I let my girl wear it,, but in the context of that particular show, it is pretty much style wise similar to the Brats type dress style. Lots of skin showing.
Thanks Lori! I will be expecting a picture:) Too cute I bet!
Brittney you are amazing! All those costumes you make I could never do it – yes start a business you would have lot’s of sales I am sure:)
Kristine I would love to be the sexy vampire or zombie – but in the bedroom not prancing around with my kiddies trick or treating lol! Agreed – it is totally impossible to find costumes for us that cover us up!
Alice I love Blind melons “No Rain!” As for the robes I don’t think they exist anymore so sad…
Serenitynow you are bang on! The exposed to way too much everywhere! It seems to me that the message girls are getting right now is you will not be successful unless you are sexy and clueless! Awful!
Sara that is so awesome that you getting your little guy ready for the big day – I had/have a few who were not so fond of Halloween and find it way to scary – I did the same thing.
Thanks Aileen I love the hairy warewolf! Glad to see others agree with me, although I know a few mommy’s out there who would go out of their way to be the wench/prostitute pirate for the school’s class party LOL
Jen I have soooo tried the homemade route! All the money I could save!
My husband keeps so many things Christine – think I will check to see if there is an old vinyl parka with a smelly plastic mask! Forgot about those LOL
Tracey I wish I was still Art Director in this house!
Right on, Chantel. What happened to the time when we made costumes from things at home. This year, our 2 year old granddaughter is going as a box similar to a costume her mother wore when she was young, a Di, make from a cardboard box.
Thanks for this post!!! Since when is Halloween a time to dress up like a skank? Seriously!!!! I make my daughters outfits, and I have three so it’s a ton of time and effort, the only outfit I could find for me that was modest, was a plus size pirate….so is it only bigger girls that get to be modest for halloween?? Hmmmm maybe it’s time to start a new business 🙂
UG. I’m glad I don’t have that problem yet because my daughter is only 3, BUT I found the same issue trying to find a costume for myself for a party. Why do I have to be a sexy vampire or a sexy zombie. Why is it so hard to find a costume that actually would cover my whole butt and boobs??
We’re into pillaging our costume box and putting something together, and adding a few new touches. This year, my daughter told me she wants to go as our (black) cat. We can work with that without getting weird, I think, though I have to find a black shirt.
That witch reminds me of the Bee Girl from Blind Melon’s “No Rain” video, though – remember that?! Funny, and because she’s got leggings on, not as bad as it could be but yes, whatever did happen to robes? Is neon green her coven’s colour or soemthing?
it’s what they are exposed to..unfortunately on tv. I don’t have girls but I just think how cold it is usually for halloween..they’ll be covered up anyway..might as well find a costume that is warm! boys are easier when it comes to these things.
Julie – you old fart….ha! The costumes are ridic but what do we expect when the clothes they are selling pre-teen and teen girls these day are outrageous. Honestly – it boggles my mind! I bought Will’s costume this year – and have it already so he can practice…he wasn’t a fan last year!
i insist on “home made” (or thrown together) costumes. i, too, believe that _every_ girl/woman costume out there should just be labeled “whore” and get it over with. sheesh, i sound like an old fart!
Luckily my Little Missy Doodle wants to be Izzy from Jake & The Neverland Pirates so….pink shirt, pink bandana on head, purply-blue leggings & a “pixie dust pouch” and we are good to go!! Thank goodness she’s 3!!
Phew! Glad I’m not the only one! This year is looking good – daughter wants to be a werewolf – fully covered and hairy to boot! Jen, I so agree with you about adult costumes. Last year I wanted to be a pirate. Apparently all pirates are wenches/prostitutes. Totally inappropriate for a school party! Whatever happened to being a hobo and dressing out of the dress-up bin or dad’s closet??
Great post, Chantel! Those costumes are outrageous. Luckily my daughter tends to stick with the gender neutral characters (spy, punk rocker, etc) and often we go the homemade route. But I find that if I ever have to dress up the costumes are SO crazy. There is no way I would wear any of them.
Cuyler is wearing an oversize red long sleeve tee (under his sweater) and black track pants. He’s going as “Murray Wiggle”.
Cam will wear his football stuff and we paint his face gray and green so he goes as a zombie football player.
Eva wants to be a princess. She will happily wear an oversized fluffy pink dress over a track suit with a tiara and carry a wand. I might put makeup on her.
No – I wouldn’t let my kid wear a costume wear that much skin is showing.
What happened to the vinyl parkas that came with a smelly plastic mask that we used to get?
I’m just getting into the foray of Halloween costumes for girls, and most of them are completely atrocious. I mean, really! I’m so glad my smallest is still 3 years old, and I’m still the Art Director in our house. Wow!!
