Every time we get together with my best friend and her family- she tells my daughters about how I called her from the hospital each time to say “I had a baby girl” and she wept loud and wet at her bond desk surrounded by boys who only cried over money. At that point she had already had her two girls and loved the way I dutifully followed suit to offer playmates for hers.
For many years our families matched -tall, funny husbands who got along famously- then I kind of blew it by getting divorced- leaving her husband overwhelmed with the estrogen crowd. At one point this year, he screeched out of the driveway looking for a lad to have a pint with- a little tired of the hormonal house.
We have been getting together for New Years at their cottage for several years. There was a time when our four beautiful daughters fit into a large tub comfortably and stayed in there together until their skin got wrinkly and pruney. (One is missing as she was having a “time out” that lasted almost 3 years)
This year on New Year’s day it rained from dawn until late at night. I must say if you are going to get cabin fever this is who I want to get it with. I love these people and can be totally myself around them. The brilliant part is the way our kids get along so famously. And if you think big girls forget to play or take themselves too seriously you have to see them every year in the snow like babies- playing for hours – building forts, digging, sliding and getting very wet. it may surprise you, they are 17, 16 , 15 and 13.
This year with the rain the four girls spent two hours giggling and shouting and whispering, styling, putting on glam makeup and singing in the bathroom. Four in the tub again.
plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.
(the more things change the more they stay the same)

I love this too! Love. Love. The tub shots, I must duplicate that. Our girls have their cousins to grow up with. It won’t be quite the same as I imagined with us hanging with Maddy and the extended family at the cottage, but it will still be good. Since I am an “older” mom, I don’t know many people my age with young children, but hopefull that will change when we move.

I love this Nancy! What great shots! I spent New Years with my friend and her family – her youngest and Will are a month apart. We joke at what massive trouble they will get into as they get older…they both have that devil look to them…hellllp…but we’re secretly looking forward to it!

A great New Year’s up north again watching our big girls play. How lucky we are to have found each other before kids and become closer since kids. It is a joy to see them all together, completely unaware of the weather outside. If we can show them the gift of true friendship, which we share, what greater gift is there? Love you!

That is soooo great!! My kids are the only grandchildren in the family on either side, but so far, they have each other. (Actually, I lie – we have 2 new babies born this past August, in Texas and in Paris. We won’t visit much.) Still, I’d love for them to find some long-time closeness with other kids – kids to “grow up” with. Le sigh. Maybe…
