never travel lightly

One of the best pieces of life advice recently sent to me  is  “never travel lightly”. I did not need the advice but liked the affirmation. I travel HEAVY.

She said you need to be ready for everything and anything life throws at you. And look good when life throws it at you.
Also, I can’t stand the idea that I might have some time and nothing productive to fill it with.
This weekend I had –
all my cookie decorations
3 glue guns
3 cake pans
2 cakes
icing
a large container of model magic
astro turf
all my receipts from 2010
a calculator
3 books
2 DVDs
my running gear
a down vest
a rain jacket
2 hats
some beads and twine
smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers and crackers
sneakers
boots
my mixmaster
IPOD
a camera
a video camera
a bathing suit
clothing, p.j.s etc
 2 pairs of sunglasses
car snacks
water
car music
I like to think that if I was suddenly asked to go to a wedding or a hoedown (not to be confused with a ho down) I would be ready for either.
I know fashion people who say – take only black and white clothes, minimal amounts- one good outfit and and switch it up with a pretty scarf or necklace. First of all – no colour?Death. And they never seem to mention the mixmaster.
I would rather die. My things are like friends to me. I am not totally lost without them but I am at my best with them.
What about you- do you travel lightly? Do you hate it? ( forget about the little kid gear, that doesn’t count)

Back in the day, I used to lug a purse around so heavy with stuff, I could probably be away from home for about 3 days without needing anything… these days I don’t go anywhere at all, it seems. And I’m so happy to have my purse void of diapers and sippy cups and opened baggies of goldfish crackers and stuff making drip marks and crumbs in the bottom of it, I might actually buy a new one soon!!
