Ah technology. You are amazing.
Yesterday my friend Susannah kept me ‘in’ the delivery room while her awesome sister Telly welcomed baby Oliver into the world. Her random updates were so exciting!
Come on baby! Get here already!
5.5 cm!
In the throes!
In pain – losing it.
Better now – Epidural – Happy town!
Then it was 6 and I took Will to his swimming class. My phone came with me this time.
8.5 – and I was all ‘GOGOGOGOGOGOGO’ thinking the arrival was imminent…
9.5 – AHHHH
Then it was two hours later before he decided to show up! I was losing it until the ladies I play paddle with reminded me that it was normal.
When I got home, after seeing pics of that freaking adorable baby, I went up and gave my kid a kiss while he was sleeping.
I remember so well when my doula Lisa told me to relinquish control to the baby in the delivery room. She said that he’d show up on his time and how he wanted to and on his time.
So Will. Even though it’s 5am and I’m up because you peed in my bed. And even though you’ve discovered the Family Guy ‘mama mama mom’ video and think it’s a riot to imitate it ALL the time. Even though you refuse to dress yourself. Even though you discovered this week that farting in a car with the windows rolled up is both revolting and sort of hysterical.
Even with these things. I’m forever indebted to you for deciding to pop into this world in a short five hours. You may want to keep that in your pocket for high school, it may get you out of a jam or two.
Welcome Baby Oliver – what a lucky, lucky boy you are to be in the family you are!

Enough! Can’t handle all this adorableness! Sara, just so you know, Telly knew the entire time that you were cheering her on from afar. She was a trooper and she knew that so many people were supporting her along the way. What a comfort, I’m sure. I LOVED this post. You are incredibly thoughtful.
