If you’re newly single, dating is hard at the best of times. But knowing what to wear can help get you off on the right foot. I chatted with Erica Phelan, President of Runway Luxe, a fun urban brand of clothes, for some advice on fashion, accessories and how to pull it all together for the perfect date look.
Erin: If you’re new on the dating scene, what are some things you should wear on a first date?
Erica: The key to dressing for a date is confidence. Focus on your best features and choose pieces to showcase them. A hint of sexy is always encouraged for a first date; however, if you decide to showcase your legs with a thigh-skimming mini dress, make sure to balance out the sexy silhouette by covering up a little on top. Try going with a long sleeve or high neck option.

Erin: What are some things you should avoid?
Erica: Never wear garments which require constant adjustments or re-positioning. Also, keep venue in mind—where the date takes place has a lot to do with what will be appropriate to wear. For example, you might do a flowy maxi dress for a patio date, or do something more sophisticated like a pencil skirt and open-back blouse for upscale dining.

Erin: Are there any trends for summer we should know about?
Erica: Structured silhouettes and body-con styles continue to reign supreme for summer 2015. Vest/blazer-style dresses are huge for the coming months and all-white looks are hotter than ever—as seen on the SS 2015 runways of Carolina Herrara, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Victoria Beckham.

Erin: How do accessories fit into the picture? Is it all about the shoes? The purse? Statement jewellery?
Erica: Accessories are the finishing touch and are meant to complement your outfit, but not distract from it. For a first date, minimal is always best—be polished but never overdone.

Erin: Do you have any last pieces of advice for dressing well on dates?
Erica: Flirty and feminine is the perfect theme for a date. Always look perfectly put together and polished; there is no greater confidence builder than looking and feeling fabulous!
We couldn’t agree more. If you feel great and are confident in yourself, that will shine through.
