I was out and about earlier than usual this morning, and I crossed paths with various people, as I often do. Though the two-cheek kiss is a very casual greeting, especially in Montreal, when you actually grab a person in your arms and hold onto them while you plant a kiss on each of their cheeks, or grab their faces for the sake of accuracy, or even if you get a lovely kiss on the back of the hand, I reckon kissing is… lovely. (And no, it’s not the same as kissing strange men on the lips.)
Cold and flu season be damned – everyone should do it more often. (And cheeks are fairly safe, anyway.) You smile back when a person says they’re happy to see you, and ask how you are. The kisses are just part and parcel. I like it.
On the way back home, I added up how many people I’ve kissed today…
My husband and two children, of course. Then one teacher, three parents, one rock star, two store clerks, one fox, one undercover security guard, a cashier, and two neighbours.
And it’s barely even 11 AM.
Go kiss somebody – you can consider it part of being lovely.
