Will Ferrell Is Every Parent Texting During Dinner

We all do it.

Just a quick check to see if anyone liked our last Instagram post. Maybe a quick scroll through Facebook to check what’s happening while we wait for our coffee. Then suddenly, it’s 3 hours later and we’ve looked at the entire internet. Whoops.

We’re a generation of smartphone obsessives. Our kids can’t get enough of their devices. And our kids’ kids….? Well, there’s a fair chance they might actually come out holding a smartphone.

So what do we have to do to convince ourselves to put the phone down? Because God only knows, being reprimanded in public doesn’t go down well…

Perhaps a little laughter? U.S. nonprofit group, Common Sense Media, has brought out a series of hilarious ads featuring Will Ferrell, which poke fun at a seriously distracted dad at the dinner table. In the videos, dad (Ferrell) is unable to put his phone away during dinner time, despite protests from his kids that they miss him dearly.

“Hey, hey everyone, shut up. This filter makes me look like a cat,” he replies. Sound familiar?

The #DeviceFreeDinner campaign aims to get the whole family on board with some simple tips for a balanced digital life. With family games and activities for dinnertime and a family media plan among the online resources, here’s hoping we can all learn to put down the smartphone and strike up some conversation starting tonight.

And if Will Ferrell can’t get us off our phones, who can?
