Father’s Day is around the corner and it’s almost time for the tributes and praise for dear old Dad. When I think of my own father and the legacy he has passed on to me, it’s impossible to consider him without considering his love of reading. From the early days reading the Little House on the Prairie series out loud to us, to today when we share our favourite mystery and thriller titles, my father and I share a love of reading and a love of books. So books make the perfect Father’s Day gift for him. If there’s a man in your life who can’t sit down anywhere (on the beach, on the couch, on the subway) without a book, here are five current titles that would make wonderful gifts for Dad.
- This is the book that my own children will be giving their beer-loving father this holiday. Author Mirella Amato is “not just a beer educator. She is a beer evangelist.” The book is comprehensive and informative, and my husband will be reading this one (with a beer in his hand, no doubt) all summer long.
- Bird Box is one of the creepiest and scariest new novels I’ve read in a while. Do you have a man in your life who loves Stephen King? Show him you’re in the know by gifting him with this summer’s hottest thriller, Bird Box.
- A few weeks ago, an excerpt from Rob Lowe’s latest memoir, Love Life, went viral. It told the story of sending his eldest son off to college, and readers were impressed with Lowe’s emotional and candid writing. As with his first memoir, this book is full of fun Hollywood namedropping, but reveals Rob Lowe to be the kind of guy that even your husband would enjoy hanging out with.
- Terry Fallis is a very funny Canadian writer, and his newest novel is a perfect light read for a father or father-in-law. Earnest Hemmingway is having a rough day; he’s lost his wallet, his girlfriend and his job. On top of all that, he’s trying to deal with sharing a name with a famous writer. He embarks on a journey to overcome his name, and meets characters like Diana Ross and Peter Parker along the way. This was a fantastic summer read that will get passed around by all family members at the cottage.
- This one is the book I’d chosen for my own father. We have similar taste in Southern Gothic mystery novels, and bestselling novelist Greg Iles’ Natchez Burning is the first in an epic trilogy weaving crimes, lies and secrets. Fortunately for me, my father read my mind and picked this one up before I could…I’ll borrow it when he’s done and pick up another book that we’ll both love for his big day!
If you’ve got a father in your life who loves to read, share a little book love with him this weekend. And then let him find a hammock somewhere to enjoy!
