A few years ago, I got introduced to Marche Jean-Talon Market and Marche Atwater in Montreal.
I went to Montreal that year, to specifically attend Mondial de la Biere (the world of beer) with a friend, who is also a food sales rep.
The beer festival was a bit disappointing, but the food we discovered at Marche Jean-Talon Market and Marche Atwater made up for it.
I was hooked immediately. I bought everything…chocolate, bread, salt, cheese, spruce beer, etc. My friend was smart and brought coolers and trust me, we filled it up.
I bought some butter. Not sure why…but it was $3.99 and I figured why not?.
Well let me tell ya something…the stuff rocks. I had NO idea that it would be that GOOD. But it is…it’s rich and creamy and salty and beyond delicious.
So now everytime I go to Montreal I buy it. But lately I have been spreading the word on twitter and I have now formed a (little) club of foodies who LOVE the stuff. (you know who you are @theresaalbert and @startwithbutter).
@theresaalbert was kind enough to shlep a tub back for me (she is sorry she didnt bring back a dozen tubs). As for @startwithbutter, I tweeted to him that I was willing to share and we met on the street with an extra tupperware container and a plastic knife. It was too funny.
Then I bought bread from Brick Street Bakery and had a lovely lunch in my car. Bread and Butter. Can it get any better?
So why can’t I buy this butter here in Ontario? can you say ILLEGAL.
Yup..the percentage of fat is too high. Can you believe?
I encourage anyone going to Montreal to head to Marche Jean-Talon or Marche Atwater and pick up a tub.(or two).
Don’t forget to let me know what you think of it.
P.S Here’s some info on the butter: It’s called Beurrerie Du Patrimoine, and it’s produced from Ferme Jean-Noel Groleau, Compton, Quebec, 1 819 853 9373 or check out their website www.fermegroleau.com

Who in God’s name decided creating a mosque at ground zero was basically the best idea? I’m no great fan of either Glen Beck or Sarah Palin and yet when held up against Obama and his supremely idiotic governing administration, these two are geniuses, get real Usa, there’s a lot of unusual stuff happening. Butter illegal?? And what about all the junk food? I love butter and as far as I know
it’s the healthy stuff we should all be eating, not margarine.

Isn’t also illegal to sell yellow margarine in Quebec?
I’m going to go check the fat content on the nutritional info on this butter. How much fat can be in it to make it illegal???
Odd laws surrounding bread spread…
