You are my friend from childhood and we lost touch.
Your visiting cancer brought us back together.
You come to me now as a gift. You show me your hope and your strength.
The other day you were, for a moment, cranky and mad at the condition it has put you in.
You said ‘Nance, the chemo is killing everything in me”
I said “No it is putting it to sleep. The body can do amazing things. For now it sleeps but it will re awaken.”
You agreed. ‘ You are right. I don’t like the word hate or kill. Ummm. I fucking hate cancer, though”
We both laughed.
I bought you something today: it is this journal of hope.
Write in it. Words have power. We are looking to you for your hope and bravery. We know you can do it. One cranky day here and there, Sally, but the rest are to be brave ones. I know you are up to it.
Tomorrow I will pick you up and make you laugh and take you to church and then to brunch. And you will need to tell me what else you will let me do.
