a long time ago we knew each other for a short period of time; you don’t know anything about me. It was easy back then. No one had a cushier berth than we did. It’s not surprising our friendship could survive that. It’s only out there in the real world that it gets tough.
One of the best things about having children start to grow up into people is that you can share big girl and big boy stuff with them
You can chat with them about all manner of things
They can offer wisdom in surprising moments and clarity that can make them ageless
and seconds later they practically step off the curb into oncoming traffic or drop their iPod into their bowl of soup or their BlackBerry in the toilet
But I love that moment when you no longer need to watch Disney movies and you can begin to share some of your favourites with them
I recently watched “The Big Chill” with my younger daughter.
I remember this movie so well. It came out in 1983 and when I was in second year University I had 2 male roomates and 4 female roomates. One of the guys said we were all going to go to this great movie together- it is like ‘family movie night’ he said with a grin
Afterwards we all went out for (too much) beer and sat around a big table and asked each other who do you relate to, which character do you think you are most like, what would you do if you were her/him?
Deep chats after a great movie? LOVE that stuff.
I remember thinking my whole life lay ahead of me. And I was so excited about everything I would be and do. I thought about the kind of person I had wanted to be in my life.
Seeing this sort of life changing movie again with my 15 year old was really fascinating.
She loved it. And I loved it again with her.
I thought about how life has surprised me and how I made my decisions that formed where I am now. Some bad decisions, some great ones, some spectacular ones.
Amazingly I sat there this second time thinking about how my whole life lies ahead of me (still) and I am so excited about everything.
I thought about how friendships reveal themselves when difficult life changing moments come up- stuff we never had to deal with in our early twenties. It made me think about how my closest friends are the finest people and have really stood the test of time. Because those friends at that time have taught me about friendship I have been able to continue to find the best people to get close to.

It’s sick and wrong that we live this far apart. 🙁
The saying is, “all MANNER of things”, not all matter of things.
I find it frustrating when very old expressions are mis-used by someone who is writing to communicate with others in a public forum. It is important.

Oh Dirty Dancing is NOT a good movie, Kath but it has a cult like following. And 50 Shades of Grey is the worst book I have ever read but I am still going to read 2 and 3 when my best friend is done with them! Don’t confuse any of these with taste!
Wow, I loved The Big Chill back in the day, and played the soundtrack until the tape wore out. Awesome.
Never liked (and still can’t find it in me to appreciate) Dirty Dancing though (movie or soundtrack). Oh well. Then again I hated Bridges of Madison County, too. Also won’t touch Fifty Shades of Gray with a ten foot pole. Guess there’s no accounting for tastes, eh?

why can’t we all be neighbours and drink wine and watch these movies and discuss? Why can’t I have things exactly the way I want it with grumbler right next door cutting the grass when it needs it, being super stylish and drinking wine with me when I need it?
ok erin- when you watch dirty dancing tell me you dont want to do a running leap into the arms of anyone around-like you are flying across the room! Loved that move.

I loved this movie, but I REALLY loved the soundtrack. Man, I should check it out again – I haven’t seen it in more than 15 years, I’m sure.
I watched the movie in high school and totally connected with the story and characters. We all listened to the sound track, still do. I think it’s time to watch it again (along with Dirty Dancing – LOL).
