I’ve often thought how nice a little bit of mediocrity in my life would be.
While, yes, I do believe that normal is quite boring…sometimes I need a little bit of it.
And I got a whole weekend of it. I gotta say – I loved every second of it. Maybe more would be nice. Maybe boring isn’t such a bad thing…
Friday night Eva went for a sleepover at my Mum’s, as she does every Friday night.
I dropped the boys off at our local gymnastics centre from 5:30pm until 10pm. Yes – that’s FOUR AND A HALF hours. Kid-free on a Friday night.
That’s an uninterrupted dinner conversation and catching up on a weeks worth of pvr’d shows!

The fact that I am able to drop Cuyler (and Cam) off there and walk out knowing that he will manage (and if he can’t then they can manage him) is priceless. They eat pizza, do crafts, gymnastics and a movie. They love it and Cuyler even has friends there who share the same interests as him. Like little Molly here:
A few weeks ago Cuy was invited to a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese. The party was this past Sunday. So this past Saturday we went present shopping.
Just Cuy and me.
I loved every single second of our 2-hour excursion. He was fun and funny and charming and brought a smile to many faces. He was thoughtful enough to ask if we could buy a book for Cam and Eva. He – himself – chose 2 really pretty purple bracelets from Ardene for his friend’s birthday gift and then 2 ZhuZhu Pets for her. I was so proud of him. I thoroughly enjoyed being with him. And it felt so normal.

Sunday I took him to the party. I stayed to keep an extra eye on him in the headache inducing chaos that is Chuck E Cheese. Cuyler was thrilled to be there.
It was interesting to see him use all his tokens on the little kid rides and not the games, like all of his friends. He had zero interest in trying to win tickets for a prize.
But there was a moment that made my heart swell. One of his friends walked over and said “Cuyler this is for 2 people. Do you want to come on with me?” So he did and they rode the ride together. It was just so apparent that these kids really DO like him. They really WANT to include him. Their friendships with him may not be typical but they are genuine.
A Friday night playgroup.
A Saturday afternoon shopping trip.
A Sunday afternoon birthday party.
It sounds like a pretty typical weekend for many families. Nothing too exciting. No great adventures. A little mediocre for some?
It was one of the best weekends ever.
