Getting yourself motivated to exercise can be more than half the battle sometimes. For me a new pair of Nikes or a fresh New Balance t-shirt or a new pair of Lululemon high waist Wunder Under tights (I swear by them) get me going. But this can get a pricey, so I have to find other ways to motivate myself to head to the gym.
Whether you run, walk, hike, box or pump iron, a playlist full of great, motivational, upbeat songs can really make a world of difference.
So here is my go-to gym playlist of the moment that has yet to fail in getting me up off the couch and into a pair for running shoes!
Kelly Clarkson—Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
This is a go to for me. The lyrics alone are enough to make you feel invincible, like you can do literally anything. I swear I once held a plank for an extra minute after hearing the line, “Baby you don’t know me ‘cause you’re dead wrong / What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.
Naughty Boy & Sam Smith—La La La
If you are hitting the treadmill or running outside, this song is a great choice. At 125 BPM (beats per minute), Naughty Boy and Sam Smith are sure to get your heart rate up AND you get to listen to Sam Smith’s sultry voice… talk about motivation.
Alicia Keys—Girl On Fire
“She’s on top of the world, hottest of the hottest girls.” Yup, that’s the dream. Being your hottest, healthiest you is why you’re at the gym and Alicia totally gets it. So be the girl on fire every time you enter your gym. (Also this video is just all kinds of mom awesomeness!)
Beyonce—Run The World (Girls)
We might’ve always known who was running the world, but thanks to Beyonce, now so does the rest of the world. So run that 5km like girls run the world.
David Guetta ft. Sia—Titanium
Because, damn right, you are bulletproof! And they can all take aim but you will not fall. Get back up, keep going, keep moving!
DJ Khaled—All I Do Is Win
This is definitely a “mom’s only song” aka should be listened to in your headphones if the kids are around. But if there ever was a motivational song, it was DJ Khaled’s anthem. As your pushing you limits and feel like that last set of weighted squats is just not going to happen, just remember, all you do is win… no matter what!
Katy Perry—Roar
Katy Perry’s music is upbeat, positive and has some really great motivational lyrics to keep you plowing through your toughest workouts. “You held me down but I got up / Get ready ‘cause I’ve had enough.” Release your inner tiger and let yourself roar!
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—Can’t Hold Us
The beat alone is enough to make this a great workout song. Fast, fun and fierce—Macklemore and Ryan Lewis really hit is out of the park with this one. ‘Cause the ceiling really can’t hold you when you’re blasting through your elliptical workout.
Fort Minor—Remember The Name
The title of this song might be a bit ironic; maybe you’ve never heard of Fort Minor before. But after this, I’ll put money on this song making into your workout rotation. The song is all about coming from nowhere and making something of yourself. “This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will / 5% pleasure, 50% pain and 100% reason to remember the name.”
P!nk—Raise Your Glass
As if we could make this list without our favourite mom rocker! This is an anthem for loving yourself, no matter how strange, weird or different the world thinks you are.
