So, in a few weeks, I’ll be turning 28. On one hand, this seems crazy old, especially since I don’t think I’ve aged much since 20. It’s hard to reconcile Becca of eight years ago with Becca today. On the other hand, I got confused and thought I was 29 for the last year, so– upon doing the math correctly– I’m actually getting younger. Heh. That’s the trick to birthdays not sucking, apparently. (Although I think the forgetfulness in the first place is a bad sign.)
Last night J asked what I wanted for my birthday, and I gave him the typical candy and movies bit. “There’s nothing else?” he pressed. “Like, something you really have your heart set on?”
I couldn’t think of anything. Except a new house.
It’s not that I don’t like our house– I love it. The bones are perfect, the location is ideal. I just want this house to be overhauled: I want fresh paint, I want a new kitchen, I want wood floors, I want moulding. The works. I’ve been keeping a Look Book for years. Every time I see something I like, I’ll try and save it. It happened once during an episode of ‘Skins’ where I screencapped the staircase in a character’s hallway:
(I know, right? Definitely worth pausing for.)
The Look Book and wistful pining have tided me over for years now, but I’m starting to get anxious. I helped my mom move into her new place a couple weeks ago, and we painted the walls these beautiful shades of sea blue and celery green. And, just before that, we finally redid the kids rooms and put up beadboard.
All of it put me in the mood for further home improvements. Almost every room in the house is basic beige walls with windows– there’s a small baseboard, but no other trim. In the photo above, that moulding around the window? We did that. None of our other windows have moulding. It seems like a small thing, but it made a huge difference. It’s like– nothing here is awful, and I can’t complain; it’s just a bunch of small, tiny changes I would make that I know would make a tremendous visual impact.
… Well, okay. Most of them aren’t small. Heh. Here’s a run-down of my fantasy home redo:
DARK WIDE PLANK WOOD FLOORS
I’d want them in the whole house, but Jason thinks first floor only. I also want more variance and a hand-scraped look, but Jason wants a uniform smooth color. These are Armstrong engineered oak in a 7 inch plank, and they’re my current top choice. Although– let’s be honest– I’d be happy with anything.
KITCHEN FACELIFT
Ah, my kitchen. Right now, it’s white appliances, beige counters, and the most boring light wood cabinets you can imagine. But in my dream, it’s this:
I know they’re not everyone’s style, but I’m a huge fan of white cabinets (if done correctly). I think a clean, Shaker-style panel works best; especially paired with satin nickel pulls. These are a laminate option from Thomasville. Open shelving would be a dream, glass-front cabinet doors would be equally lovely. I actually like the white-on-white in this kitchen, although for our own house I’d like a Corian countertop called Earth.
Jason, I know, wants to go darker and more expensive– I think his dream would be a black granite– but for me, there’s something so organic and warm about this countertop. I’m just in love with it.
PATIO
When we bought this house, we had enough wiggle room in our budget to either upgrade inside the home (like a pimped out kitchen), or to upgrade the actual floorplan. We opted for floorplan, because it would be more costly to change size and exterior down the line. One of the upgrades we made was to add a covered patio in the back. It’s right off the dining room, and it’s actually very pretty, with a paneled ceiling and a fan option– and we’ve done nothing with it since we moved in. It’s become the space of abandoned projects and outgrown toys. We’ve never bought a grill. We keep talking about it, but so far: nothing. There’s no seating to speak of, minus a single recliner Jason’s brother brought down this summer. It’s just– it just needs a lot of help.
I’d love something like this:
That’s the Pottery Barn Chesapeake outdoor dining set. It doesn’t have to be brand name; I just like solid wood furniture. Some string lantern lights would be perfect. Or– in my wildest dreams– we turn the current eat-in nook into part of the kitchen, and make our current backdoor into French doors, and our current patio into an enclosed dining room. (In my WILDEST dreams.)
But those are my big-ticket things. Those are Lottery or Big Promotion things. Things that are more realistic, and that I would be grateful for:
Wall-mounting the TV in our bedroom.

Hi Becca, I enjoyed reading about all of your renovation ideas from the big-ticket overhauls to the small changes – every little bit helps your home come together, so I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want a well-organized garage! I also really love the Earth Corian® countertops you posted about; it’s definitely a warm, cozy color. Good luck! Christine from DuPont

I have no idea what to do with our guest bedroom. I feel like I need to figure out a way to get more storage out of my house, because the whole guest closet is filled with Christmas stuff. I don’t know where else to put all of it. I’d really REALLY like to re-do our garage with some overhead storage and put it all up there. OH! And I want a bike in there too hanging off the wall! A bike that I ride all the time with my little baby in tow- and I’m tan and skinny and rich and I can ride up whole mountains with my hair still looking perfect while I drink my bottle of water! Okay that was really more of a life dream than a house dream, but still. Heh.

We rent, but we just moved to a house after being in a TINY apartment for 5 years. It says something about how tiny it was that our new 1 bedroom terrace cottage feels spacious, haha! Anyway, I love home improvement dreaming 🙂 right now most of my plans are things like finding the parfect quilt cover, which is hard because we have a king size quilt and those covers are expensive. I’m also in the process of putting pictures up which I want to be a mix of my own art and other things. I just need more frames, more hooks and more time to organize it all. My other project is hand-making a crochet blanket to go on our new sofa.
I think my dream house would have something like yours, I love floorboards although after helping some friends do their own floors I’d want to pay a professional to do it. I like neutral walls with maybe a wallpaper feature wall, and lots of framed art. I love plain pine or white wood furniture that a lot of Scandanavian houses have.
I hope you can get at least some of your upgrades done for your birthday!

I LOVE seeing what other people would love to do to their homes. Please do more posts like this.
I have so many dreams for my house. It’s beige…very very beige. I would love to add some big and bold color to it! I obviously need some built-ins in my office…white. I TOTALLY want white wood.

I just moved in with my boyfriend who lives in his deceased great grandmother’s old home, and whose idea of decoration is zombie movie posters. (Although, I’m not much better, my idea of decorating is dance photoraphy, Disney princess coloring book pages, and pictures of my friends.)
I’d love to redo rooms and make them look nicer and have an actual “look” but that’s neither in our budget nor a possibility in the home we live in. I guess I’ll have to make due for now, luckily, I’m low maintenance — the one thing that is a necessity for me I HAVE — lots of built into the wall bookshelves to house my library!

Oh my goodness, lady – this post comes JUST as I’m in a heap of tears about the lack of “finishing” going on in our house. I’ve been tres patient, but I believe I’ve come to the end of my sanity. My list is so very long… We own a duplex, and have spent loads of time and money fixing the other apartment, and it’s my turn dammit, and I want it NOW!!
More than anything, we need to repaint. (I’ve only been waiting on our painter since July, but as of this morning, we’ve given him the boot and are exploring other options. So far, we have someone who can start as early as LATE NOVEMBER. Ack!!) *sob*
After paint, we will work on our new dressing room – I know it sounds extravagant – and the PAX closet system is on the floor in boxes just WAITING for the paint to be on the walls. And I know all the finishing touches will just take YEARS… oy.
Le sigh. There are certainly worse problems to have… but MAN I hate waiting!! My birthday in in November…
PS – getting organized, in garages or wherever makes me so very happy too!! It’s not lame at all.
