This is a discussion that happens in our house all the time. How long can you keep leftovers in your fridge? Growing up my parent would make enough food to last a few meals. Saved some time for my mom who worked shift work at nights and we were often told that the flavours are better the next day as they had time to “soak in”.
As a mom of all boys and all with incredible appetites it’s not often we have leftovers of any sort. I actually try to cook more than enough (like stew) that could possible last another meal. I’m lucky when it does!
Last night, we ate out at the cheap and cheerful go-to spot Congee Queen. It’s fast and it’s fresh authentic chinese food that is perfect for nights that we don’t have a lot of lingering time with the boys. We ordered dishes like snowpea leaves with king oyster mushrooms, garoupa with bean curd hot pot, and soya chicken. So good. But the portions are MASSIVE and we did end up taking home leftovers and the kids were excited about that.
You can ask Nema almost anything about food..she’s always happy to assist!
Okay…so how long can you keep leftovers?? I asked Nema McGlynn the dietician at Loblaw down at the Carlton Maple Leaf Gardens location for her advice. She’s my go-to person when I have these questions. You can ask almost anything about food..she’s always happy to assist!
“Depends on what leftover it is but in general most leftovers should be consumed within 2-3 days, if stored in the refridgerator.” says Nema. “This is particularly true for dishes that have a high moisture content, low acidity and rich in proteins like meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy. Prompt refrigeration can help keep the quality and limit bacterial growth of your leftovers.”
Nema also sent over this handy “Safe Food Storage” sheet that is used in the store that I found very helpful!
