December 1st is just around the corner, and in my house that means it’s time to pull out the boxes from the highest rafters of the attic and the deepest corners of the basement, and start decking the halls.
The decorating of the house is a task that I simultaneously dread (the boxes…the stuffing…the nasty surprises of broken angels and moldy stockings) and love (the house…all decorated…cozy and Christmas-y). If I could have one single wish for Christmas it would be a fairy who would decorate my entire house on December 1 and put it all away on January 2, while I sit by the fire sipping Bailey’s.
That’s not going to happen, so I’ve been scrounging the malls and the internet finding the best holiday decor ideas for Christmas, and the good news is that there’s a lot out there, and there’s something for everyone.
Here are some of my favourite pieces for holiday decor.
All of these items are available in stores, or online, and you’ve got time to have them shipped to your house before Christmas. I can’t deliver on the Christmas decorating fairy, though.
CONTEST!
Our friends at Lands’ End want to help you get in the holiday spirit, and they’re offering one UrbanMoms member a $250 Lands’ End gift card to shop online. Leave a comment below to tell me about your favourite holiday decoration. Contest closes: December 15, 2013 at 12:00 noon EST.
To get you into the holiday spirit, on Cyber Monday, Dec. 2, Lands’ End is hosting its fourth annual 12 Hours of Twitter event from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. CST. Social shoppers can join the fun at #Together and follow @LandsEndPR on one of the busiest online shopping days of the year for giveaways, offers and advice. My baby boy was only 2 months old on his 1st christmas many years ago. He was my only joy then as his father had abandoned us 11 months ago before that! I was so young myself & had no family to help near by so times were rough emotionally & financially. I went shopping one day & saw this cute miniature villiage set that was on sale and I managed to buy it. Setting it up was fun as I looked at the small figured people I set up around the church, the toy store, the clothing shops, the library and the city hall building & the lovely victorian houses!. I remember thinking it looked like such a sweet, immaculate town for one to live in, that is, if it existed in the real world & imagined everyone being friendly & kind to one another greeting each other with big smiles & gracious natures! It gave me inner peace looking at it and I vowed one day I would find such a place. Move my life to many years forward & I did indeed find a small beautiful town just like that where I have now lived for 22 years with a wonderful husband by my side! That baby boy is now 42 years old and is a great man to be proud of! And i still have that small village that comes out of its box every year at Christmas to be enjoyed with its bittersweet & yet happy memories!

My favourite decoration *was* a gorgeous all white Santa doll that was about 2 feet tall. It was quite expensive but more than that, it was a sentimental gift from my mother that I cherished. My mother now has Alzheimer’s but does remember it and I didn’t have the heart to tell her what happened to it. Unfortunately, I had some of my belongings in storage while I was in between moves/houses and a family of mice decided to make it their home. It was totally destroyed and I literally cried like a baby. I always have my eye out to see if i can find another but it was purchased many years ago and chances are I won’t locate another. I know my story is a bit of a nasty one but for anyone reading, please take extra precautions with things you cherish as it could happen to you. Perhaps I may be lucky and win this giveaway with hopes I can find some new pieces that will become favourites.

I have these skaters whose bodies are gold sprayed pine cones and they are the only thing left from a Christmas display when I was a kid. There was Styrofoam to represent ice/snow, little homes and these skating girls. They are very care worn now but I love them since they remind me of when I was a child. I hang them on our tree now.

I love your sons angel, she is beautiful! Mine would also be from my children. My sons made a hand print ornament last year, wish I could show but its beautiful! We didn’t have the fanciest ornaments but they were all made with love <3

My musical menorah. It’s a family heirloom — my mother had it as a little girl. I couldn’t celebrate the holiday tonight without it.

We make paper chains every year – a tradition that has been with my family since I was a little girl. I carry it on with my kids and hope they will do so when they are grown up with kids. So much fun!
