Date night: Eat all the things

June 29, 2013 by Emily 5 Comments

Last night we had planned to go to a movie; by planned, of course, I mean we reserved the date and asked my parents to babysit, thinking we’d go to a movie close to where they live and then pick the toddler up on the way home. Of course, it could not be that simple – no (good) movies were showing when we’d be out that way, but we could see Star Trek at 10:55 p.m. in Richmond, a long way from my parents’ house but the suburb closest to where we live in Vancouver. So we asked if my parents would be willing to host the toddler for a sleepover, and drove out to Richmond.

The best thing about Richmond in the summertime is the Night Market, and so we went there to eat everything in sight and kill time before the movie started. Here’s a sampling of what we did … and ate.

These are the best things at the Night Market – batter balls filled with octopus and topped with mayo and bonito.
The best. All these balls in my mouth please.
I can’t get enough, guys.

Second best thing ever invented.
Every stall was full and fabulous.

Small, fancy bites. Overpriced, so the line was shorter.
Char-grilled liver on toast.

I don’t know why I found this juxtaposition amusing.
Me in front, giant duck in back. The giant duck is the mascot.
Children in plastic hamster balls floating on a pool of water.

Self-explanatory. I wish I had a dog.
You can buy your zombie apocalypse survival gear – bear spray, hunting knives, etc. – at this stall.

I liked these trees.
Spouse hits up a pile of meat.
German-style rotisserie pork hock. I want to marry this plate of food.

Look, it’s us.
Too many amazing pairs of socks to choose from.
There you go – facts.

There were too many stalls to try EVERYTHING, so we have to go back. I saw other people with kids, young kids even, but I wasn’t sure I would want to have to worry about losing the toddler in a crowd while trying to decide which smoky meat on a stick to eat next. I think your desire to turn this into a family event will depend on the depravity in your heart; I am a glutton, so for me this is a perfectly lovely way to spend a child-free evening with someone you kind of like.

Night markets are always fun (with or without kids)! We have a few in our city as well! So glad that you got out and to try many things! YUM!

Looks like a really fun date night. Although the octopus balls totally grossed me out…but chacun son goût, n’est-ce pas?

They are really good! But there’s a shrimp version as well, if tentacles aren’t your thing 😉

When I first read about octopus balls I paused. When I mis-read this comment as “testicles” instead of “tentacles” I spat out my water.
