The slogans sure have changed over the years. But you know what hasn’t? The hamburgers.
McDonald’s hamburgers haven’t changed much since the 1950s. While walking through Hamburger University in Illinois, while looking at old pictures and artifacts (including the ledger from the first day of sales, which totally blew me away, by the way), it was easy to see that the McDonald’s formula, the one from way back in the beginning, hasn’t changed much. The bun, the burger, the pickle, the ketchup, the mustard. It was all there. And it still looks exactly the same. There’s comfort in consistency.
And that is certainly something McDonald’s gets. And while yes, my visit to Cargill meats in Edmonton did allow me to see and hear first-hand that the rumors are just rumors, and McDonald’s hamburgers are made from 100% beef and only beef (which still makes me laugh because some of my friends who are still super skeptical are all ‘yeah, but they knew you were coming’ and then I’m all ‘oh, yes, so they changed their entire process FOR THE DAY just so we would think that they were only using beef and no fillers…uh huh, because that makes sense), my involvement in the McDonald’s moms program has taught me so much more. It’s the ultimate comfort food.
And while yes, McDonald’s certainly listens to the needs and wants and requests and demands and desires of its patrons – like the newly launched line of fresh salads in Canada (no longer will we Canadian moms complain about how they have all the good salads in the States..), and tries to come up with new and exciting and innovative eating ideas for its restaurants, you can walk into (or drive thru) any McDonald’s restaurant in any city, in any town, and get the same hamburger. Just like you could back in the 50s. and the 60s. and the 70s.
And, I believe that a McDonalds burger (besided the unbelievable consistency in any country, any time) is actually safer than the ones I can make in my own kitchen!

What I am always amazed at is how McD’s is EXACTLY the same in every country. I’ve had McDonald’s in Canada, the States, London, Paris, Barcelona, Munich and Berlin, and it’s always the same. Talk about consistency.
And please, before you judge my international dining choices, I was a STARVING STUDENT and couldn’t afford to eat local all the time, plus McDs offered the kind of familiar comfort Ali mentions above.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese, onions, pickles on a sesame seed bun. Some things are never forgotten!
