i am about to say something that probably won't win me many friends.
but, the beauty of having MY VERY OWN WEBSITE is that i get to have many, many opinions and i get to share them with all of you and you can agree (which most of you won't) and you can disagree (which most of you will) and that's cool. and no, this isn't about the circumcision debate that's circulating the interwebs this week.
here it is:
I DO NOT THINK THAT THE DARK KNIGHT WAS ROBBED BY THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES
there. i said it.
it was a fantastic movie. i LOVED it. and it wasn't exactly overlooked by Oscar…it did get 8 nominations…one of which was the nom that i truly believe it deserved: The Best Supporting Actor Nomination for Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker. He was nominated for a truly chilling and outstanding performance, and he will likely win this esteemed honor.
but best picture? i just don't think it deserves it. but, then again, i'm still angry about The English Patient winning in 1996. It should have gone to Fargo. and i'm still angry that Gwyneth Paltrow's Shakespeare in Love performance trumped Cate Blanchett's in Elizabeth (1998)
Now, i will go out on a limb and say that i have not seen The Reader (yet). I have read the book and while i enjoyed it, i have been hearing only so-so reviews, and that the redeeming bit about the movie is that Kate Winslet spends half of it in the nude.
but i have seen the other four movies.
and they were all outstanding.
Slumdog Millionaire was the best of them for me…but Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Frost/Nixon were fantastic. They made me laugh. They made me cry. They made me think.
…which was more than bloody Ghost did for me and it was nominated for FIVE academy awards in 1990.

I enjoyed “The Black Knight” but there’s no way it’s the best evah!
“Fargo” soooo should have beat “The English Patient”. Yawn!

I agree that it doesn’t deserve best picture. Heath Ledger was unbelievable, one of the best performances I have seen, and I do love Bale as Batman, minus the fact that his voice turns into Clint Eastwood when he puts on his mask, but I thought the movie itself was boring, too long, and a major disappointment for me. My hubby and I both had trouble staying awake for the whole thing. Definitely not Best Picture material. Talk about not winning any friends, I feel like the only person on the planet who thought it sucked. lol

Agreed.
Was it a great movie? Yes.
Was it one of the best superhero movies of all time? Yes.
Does Heath deserve an Oscar? Yes (posthumously or otherwise)
However, taking Heath’s death out of the equation, and judging this movie on its own, does it deserve a nod for Best Picture? No.
Come on people: Gone with the Wind. Casablanca. On the Waterfront. Ben Hur. West Side Story. Lawrence of Arabia. My Fair Lady. The Sound of Music. Oliver!. The Godfather I/II. I completely agree; while I LOVE Bale as Batman (he and KLeaton are the best ones, IMO) and Ledger did an AMAZING job as the Joker, it was certainly riddled with many flaws. It was VERY good, but not a Best Picture material, sorry.
I also agree about Gwenyth, I thought she and the movie sucked monkey ass (Shakespeare in Love that is).

I AGREE! I am not at all disappointed in the movies that were selected.
