When Companies Give Back

September 16, 2010 by Jen

Here at UrbanMoms we work with a lot of companies and a lot of brands. Most of them are forward thinking, creative, and working hard to give consumers, us, what we want. Many of them support programs locally and globally that truly give back to the communities that support them. McDonald’s, for one, definitely comes to mind.

Another one is Chevrolet. We work with them in a variety of capacities and I have always been impressed, but never more than with our introduction to Chevrolet’s Safe & Fun Hockey program. I have been aware of the program for a while but last weekend my hockey-loving daughter got the opportunity to participate first-hand. She and my husband flew to Vancouver for a session in Langley, BC. It was a session for girls from ages 5-8 with an interest in hockey and ranged from beginners to competitive players.

Dudes, this program rocked!

Here is my girl on the ice. Love the pink jerseys!

Not only did my girl get to skate with other hockey loving girls but she had a total blast! The focus of the weekend was Fun & Safety. They also focused on Respect & Responsibility. There were sessions for parents to help put the hockey experience in perspective so they don’t lose sight of the ultimate goal – having fun. My husband was very impressed.

My daughter had tons of stories about what they did and she really felt a sense of belonging and excitement. After a weekend with other girls like her it was a real confidence booster. Her favourite part? Playing hockey with these:

Yes, those are RUBBER CHICKENS!

They used many traditional drills but with a fun and funny spin appropriate for young kids. My daughter loved this. Check it out in action:

And then, to top it all off, my daughter got to meet and skate with two of her role models. Yup, Cassie Campbell and Gillian Apps, two of Canada’s top female hockey players, gold medal Olympians and overall amazing women were there!

This weekend was a great reminder for my husband and me on what is really important when participating in sports – fun! My girl knows that working hard is a part of playing sports but it shouldn’t be at the expense of having fun. These two women are amazing and successful athletes and people. I strongly believe that a big part of their success is their perspective. If it stops being fun, who wants to do it?

Thanks, Chevrolet, for a fabulous, grassroots program in communities across Canada! Check out Chevrolet’s Safe & Fun Hockey program here to learn more.
