What’s In A Name?

March 14, 2011 by sarahnewk

Confession:

I have about 8 names picked out for a baby girl that doesn’t seem to be in my future.  Boy names…not so much.
In fact, I hadn’t even give a single thought to a boy’s name until the ultrasound technician said it was DEFINITELY a boy.  Like, no mistaking it.

g1561.jpgSo the husband and I have been desperately searching for a male first and middle name that we can agree on.  We used our favourite first and middle names for our first son (duh) and the struggle is alive and well to find something for this son whose birth is fast approaching.

Before you offer your names (please, please do!!!) you should know that I tend to like good, solid names.  Names that have depth and meaning and strength.  I really like names that people can SPELL and PRONOUNCE (that’s the elementary teacher in me…)- even though I thought I’d found that for my first son and people spell his name wrong all. the. time. SIGH.

My first son’s name is Zachary.  It’s a Hebrew name that means “The Lord Remembers”.  I loved it for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it’s a decently popular name, which is exactly what I’m searching for…something that people will probably recognize but not every boy in his class will have the same name. Also, the whole Zach Morris (hello, Saved By The Bell!!) crush thing may or may not have contributed to my love of the name…

One last thing- I need the short form of his name to sound ok.  I shorten everyone’s name, even if it should never be shortened, so a short form is a must.

Seriously, I need your help.  Please offer up as many suggestions as you like- even if they’re the names of your children!

We had two names picked and the one I wanted for some reason we never did use 🙁 BUT that said we did name our son Logan – to our dispair finding out there are TONS of logans now.. crap.
Anyway, other names we thought to use:
Dax or Daxton (not many of those running around) although Dax kinda rhymes with Zach so that might get annoying for you haha!
    orrrr..
Dexter — but then again we watch that show haha!
    or
    Landon
    or
Patrick (only cus he was due pretty close to St.Pattys day and i have a wee bit of irish in me !)
But whatever name you pick im sure you will love it ! 🙂

I am partial to Tyler… which was on my “short list” for my son (who is a Joshua/Josh). Tyler could easily be shortened to Ty; which I think sounds great with Zach! Zach and Ty… I also like Curtis (Curt)…

Trent – this is the name we used for our son. Everyone loved it and said it sounded “rich”. We just loved it because it was not common. Who really wants the teacher to say “Michael?” and every boy to turn their head to say “Yes?”
We know many Daniels, Matthews, Erics, Davids, Alexs, so you may wish to avoid those also. As well, many people lately, celebrities included, are naming their sons Jack.
Best wishes for an easy and healthy delivery!!!

Well….it should be William – Will….because that’s what all the cool kids are called…:)
My other name for him was Ray. I still look at him and think he would have made a great Ray as well. and if my last name wasn’t what it is – he’d be Leo for sure. I LOOOVE that name! I agree with Christine on Lucas with your last name!

I had about 20 names picked out for my little one and after going through all of them over a period of 7 moths, I had to find more. All in all I spent 8 months and researched over 200 names, in the end picking something very simple haha.

Cameron/Cam (or Campbell – we named my Cam Campbell because it was my maiden name)
    Benjamin/Ben
    Lucas/Luke
I also like Braden, Owen and Kyle (although there are a lot of Owens around now).
Sean has also been a fave name of mine since I was little. If I didn’t marry a Sean I would have named a boy Sean.
And y’know what – I think Lucas actually sounds really good with your last name!! It has a cool flow to it!
And it’s Zachary and Lucas sound good together. A good sibset!

The name game was always so much fun and one of the things I’m sad that I’ll never do again. We have three boys, so like you, I still hold a list of girls’ names that will never be used (maybe I’ll be lucky and one day have a granddaughter – fingers crossed). Not sure if any of my boy names will work as your last name starts with N. They’re Duncan, Colin and Owen. Like Laura we picked them so there wouldn’t be nicknames – didn’t matter, everyone seems to change it anyway. They tend to get Dunc, Cole and Owie. I like that Laura suggested Alexander, although I would shorten it to Zander so you have two Z boys.
Totally off-topic, I have to say I love that Zach has red hair – my hubs has red hair and none of our boys got it :(.

My son is Joshua (Josh) and nearly 12 years later I still LOVE it. I also really like Matthew. It was our second choice and what my daughter would have been had she been a boy. James (Jamie), Liam, Samuel (Sam), Benjamin (Ben)…so many great names!

Zachary Christopher. Our last name has 2 syllables & starts with N.
Love the suggestions and LOVE your kids names. Hannah is my fav female name!!

What is Zachary’s middle name? How many syllables in your last name? What does your last name start with? What does it rhyme with?
Like you, I prefer names that are not uncommon. Unlike you, I dislike names to be shortened, so I named all three of my kids names that can’t be shortened! My kids are Hannah, Eric and Clare.
As a younger brother to Zachary, my favourite name would be David. I also like Matthew. I think I prefer Zach & Dave over Zach & Matt, because the latter sounds too similar. I also love Alexander, although I would be tempted to shorten it to Alec.
    Good luck!

Alexander – Greek for Defending Man
Jack – Hebrew for God is gracious
Josiah – Hebrew for the Lord saves
Liam – Hebrew for my people
Ethan – Hebrew for strong, firm, impetuous
Just a few suggestions from “Aunty” in Manitoba
Can’t wait to meet him whatever his name is!
