I posted awhile ago about being on the fence about whether or not to participate in a research study on genetics and autism.
Well we finally decided that we would participate and were scheduled to spend yesterday afternoon at the lab giving DNA samples and undergoing an EEG.
Wouldn’t you know it after all the hesitation and flip flopping back and forth before finally deciding to go ahead with it – we had to cancel. The biggest reason was Cuyler’s behaviour from the moment he woke up. MISERABLE. He spend most of the day shouting at us or anyone in or around his general vicinity. By the afternoon he was loaded with a cold and could barely breath through his nose.
We knew that there was no way they were going to get from him what they needed so we called and cancelled. We were not going to drive the 45 minutes to the lab only to put him through all of that knowing he wouldn’t cooperate.
Plus we would have had to miss Cam’s last baseball game and I would have missed a high school reunion. And we didn’t want to miss those for naught.
We decided that it would best done when he was back at school and back into a routine that he thrives on. And when he’s not sick…
Since we didn’t have to spend the afternoon at the lab I was able to go to a mini high school reunion with a group of girls that I went to middle and high school with. We had all reconnected on facebook and decided that 18 years was long enough and that it was time to see each other again. Unfortunately several couldn’t make it. That just means we need to plan another one in which we can all be there.
Walking in and seeing everyone was very surreal. It was amazing to hear all the stories that have filled the years since we last saw each other. And remembering all the stories that had us laughing until we cried. Between the 10 of us that were there, we have 23 children. Lots to talk about and catch up on.
It was just what this dreary momma needed after a frustrating day dealing with a very unhappy little boy.
Nothing like a group of old friends hanging out, having a few drinks and talking about old times to recharge.
On my drive home I passed by something I knew I was going to bring my kids to today – Cheltenham Badlands. Sean needed a break after having Cuyler most of the day yesterday and I knew I needed to fill the day to keep them busy. This would be perfect.
I remember going there as a little kid and thinking that we were walking on pigs backs. It is very different from when I was little, There are much deeper crevices in between the “pigs backs” now (they get deeper each year according to the info board). They are darker brown. I remember them being much lighter – almost pink. So did my mom. Hence the pigs backs.
I told Cam where we were going and he just knew that he was “going to be so bored” based on my description. He decided then and there that he would just sit in the van til we were done.
When we pulled up – he was the first one out the door saying “Oh wow. This is SICK!” (the “cool” sick) and he took off.
My mom came with us and we had a great adventure! Mom wasn’t so sure about hiking in flip flops. She watched us from afar.
It was a great way to end the weekend. If you’re ever in or around that area you should definitely plan to check it out – it does not disappoint!
