Weekend Update – Holiday Craft 2.0

December 12, 2010 by Christine

I received so much great feedback from my last craft post that I thought I’d post another one.  This one probably won’t have the wow-factor that the ornaments had, but they are quick, easy and pretty cute.  They’re easier to do with older kids because their fine motor is more attuned but you can help little ones.  I told the kindergarten teachers at the school about these last year and they do them as winter crafts now.

All you need is a yogurt drink bottle, some markers and a little bit of ribbon.  These particular yogurt drink bottles are the ones I use as they come in the shape of a snowman.

Wash the bottle out thoroughly, dry and remove the label.

Take a permanent marker and draw a face onto the top bubble on the bottle and buttons onto the main part of the bottle.  Colour the top of the bottle black for the top hat.

Once they’ve created their snowman, take a piece of ribbon or cloth and tie it around the snowman’s neck to make a scarf.  You can take mini candy canes and tape them to the sides to make arms or you can cut limbs out of construction paper to make your snowman more 2 dimensional.  Or you can stall bedtime for as long as you can and draw everything on – including jeans – like Cam did.

Last year we had glitter glue and paint going with these, but this year we kept them simple.  Which is the great thing about this craft – you can make it as easy or as involved as you want.

Happy Crafting!

Hey Alice, we get the 8 packs of the yogurt drinks and we go through them pretty quick so there’s always lots at home.
For the kindergarten groups at school we save the empties from their lunches for a few weeks before we do the craft. If we find we need more we ask the older grades for their empty ones and in no time we have all that we need!

So simple! I like simple – but where do you get all those yogurt drink bottles if you have to prep a craft for a group? Hmm.
