I just realized that it was exactly one year ago to the day that I wrote this post.
Last year we gathered for a wedding. Yesterday we gathered to see one of the guys who now lives in Prague with his family. We hadn’t seen him in a long while and thought that a full gathering was in order while he was in town, hosted by our most gracious friends.
We were all there minus 2 couples and 4 kids.
Several times during the day I sat and watched the bustle of the backyard. In awe of what we’d all created.
Gone are the nights that we would sit around a dining room table at one of their apartments drinking and playingAsshole cards. They have been replaced by afternoon barbeques resulting in early nights.

A couple of the girls and I stood watching the kids in the pool and were talking about how we hope that our kids will be as close with each other as the guys are. We hope that their friendships last as long as their dad’s friendships have. I told them that that would be up to us. I think as long as we make sure to stay close and the kids stay close then those lasting friendships will endure.
All the kids (and a dad), minus a nursing newborn
As our little kids paddled around the pool in their water wings, getting tossed around by their dads
our big kids spent the day in the woods playing manhunt, collecting golf balls and having jumping contests
But of course they would be. It’s what they see the big big guys doing. (This is the only way the enter the pool…)
I am so fortunate to have had these guys in my life for the past 15 years. I have made lasting friendships with their wives and can only hope that we are able to nurture the same type of relationships between all of our children.
