I sometimes find it difficult to articulate urbanmoms.ca’s reason for being, especially to non-Urban Moms. We are a virtual community, a resource centre, a girls night out…get it? Probably not. Urbanmoms.ca was inspired by a group of six amazing women. My friendship with this group grew out of the craziness of becoming a mom but has evolved and developed over the years to form something I depend on.
What I value about these relationships is that we are all very different. We range in age over more than 10 years, we work in different industries or at home, we are of different religions and cultures, yet we share the bond of being Urban Moms. What these and many other relationships give me is what is reflected on this site. A sense of inclusion, understanding, respect, and perspective.
I was recently speaking to an Urban Mom friend from Mississauga after she had spent some time on urbanmoms.ca. I was thrilled that she loved the site but how she said it made me even happier. She said, "It was like hanging out with friends. People who understand me and see the whole me."
So, I have stopped trying to articulate what we are about. Instead, I encourage people to spend some time here and to come back regularly as content is added every day.
