A young boy (cute as a button, of course) starts telling a story about walking in the jungle, where monkeys swing in the trees – but wait, he notices a tail that is definitely not a monkey’s! They run into a cave, only to discover – the tiger is there now! He keeps running away, only to find the tiger has beat him to his next location, to the point that it becomes really ridiculous and very funny, especially since the tiger is so darn cute. As you might suspect, the tiger turns out not to be so fearsome after all, and the boy starts a new story. Of course, it starts off with much the same sort of twist…
This bold, colourful book is a perfect read-aloud, particularly if you are willing to put the emphasis on the “loud” and get silly with it. It’s just the sort of predictably absurd thing that would sell well with toddlers and preschoolers – almost an advanced-level peek-a-boo with just a tiny, delicious hint of danger. I can’t wait to share this one with the kids at work this fall – and I predict that my own little guy will get extremely loud when I read it to him. Earplugs, anyone?
