This Song Reminds Me of Thursdays…..SIMPLY JESSY

November 25, 2010 by Sara

**If there are typos in here, this is due to the fact that I’m peeing my pants laughing at a number of things in the video that I’m about to show you….**

This week, both Ali and Sarah have talked about their love for the NKOTB and BSB and other random boy bands with initials for names.  Now, I’m slightly older and all these entries made me think of my pre-teen crushes.  Namely  – Leif Garrett….and sigh….Rex Smith.

If you’re of my generation – you watched Sooner or Later…the totally inappropriate movie about the young girl, wanting guitar lessons, instructor is hot, she hoochies herself up and lands the guitar rock god.  Yes – I know now where my love for the guitarists come from!  Oh and I also know why I never have bangs…cause frankly, I’d look just like Rex Smith…without the sweet ass jeans!  But this particular song…well, there’s a scene in the movie where he’s teaching her to play basic notes and then BAM this song comes out.  I rememember my sister was learning to play guitar and I used to get her to play the notes over and over again…LOOOSER.  I guess I shouldn’t mock the Beiber’ites….that was me.

Besides his jeans, the headband, the cheesy’ness of the entire thing…the thing that I’m laughing so hard at is that I just sang every single freaking lyric…including the ‘ooh woohoos’ at the end.    Were you an NKOTB’er…Shaun Cassidy…Rex and Leif?  Who were your pre-teen crushes??

Here is Rex back in the day…

And umm…now …as he drives his kids to band practice…the dream is over..

OMG Rex Smith!!! I had a picture of him from People magazine, standing naked by a pool wearing nothing but a guitar and a smile!!! That picture hung in my locker for grade 10 and probably all of grade 11 too!!

I am with Christine – never heard of him or the song but the lyrics sound like they were written by a 6 year old they’re so simplistic!
My crushes were all of the British persuasion – Tears for Fears (I was seriously crushing on Roland Orzabald – strange I know!), Culture Club (yes, Boy George), Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Bronski Beat – I just couldn’t get enough of the androgynous Brits much to the horror of my 5 Australian (read “macho”) brothers!

    Okay.
You are not that much older than me and I have never heard of this movie or this song. And who is Rex Smith??
I’m trying to think of who my crushes were…I remember River Phoenix, Kirk Cameron, Corey Haim (NOT Feldman) – I liked them.
Lesser known cutie I had a crush on: Trey Ames from the TV show A Year In The Life
I think my FIRST crush would have been Matt Dillon in The Outsiders. I was 9 when that movie came out and my 7-years-older-sister always watched inappropriate movies with my other sister and I. I remember thinking how cute he was and that he was best looking guy in that movie.
