So I’m off tomorrow to New York City for the weekend. It’s my friend Mike’s 40th birthday and after the ‘lost weekend’ in August, I was needing something to look forward to. When my buddy’s wife called and said ‘book a ticket, get down here,’ I did. Even though my kid and I will be eating Mr. Noodle for the next month.
I, like many others, have a massive love affair with NYC. I was late to come to the party though. I always figured that with my claustrophobia it would kill me. The first time I went was maybe 6 years ago, when Mike moved down there to be with Kerri. And it was love at first sight for me. The sounds, the smell…everything about it.
The soundtrack of NYC for me…is Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Here is a sample…I was going to put one of their rock out tunes on here, but I’m really REALLY grumpy and tired today (the kid was up with a hacking cough all night…that he magically sleeps through…Mom not so much) so I’m going with a slower number – Ramshackle Day Parade.
The first time that I visited Mike and Kerri we were cruising the streets. My friend Les and I begged them to take us to Canal Street to buy fake purses etc (which I find hilarious now because it is SO not me…I just gave two of them to Goodwill!) and we were so tired so I cried for beer o’clock.
Kerri took us to this wicked little cave on some random side street that I would never be able to find again if I tried. There was no one there but the super hot bartender playing music which I looooved. And which was Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. We just sat, talked and took in the space and the music. I bought every cd I could get my hands on before I left NYC.
I’ve been back a few times since and always listen to their music on the flight there. And my love affair just grows each time. I vow to live there (and Paris) for a year at least at some point. I hope it’s sooner rather than later!
You? Have you been to NYC? Any music remind you of the Big Apple??
*This is my step brother Matthew and I a few years (and a few pounds and jars of hair dye) ago…
Apparently I learned NOTHING from An Affair To Remember…look down for godsakes!

i share your love obsession with NYC. went there after many years this summer for my 10 yr wedding anniversary. it was divine. there’s an electricity and excitement that emanates from the streets. i know it’s cheesy, the nyc song for my summer trip was the jayzee and alicia keys new york anthem. the soundtrack of our weekend. my fave part was shopping and wandering around the side streets in soho/little italy. and bloomingdales of course. loved your description. esp the connection to the music!
