So I’m a day late here….but I missed last weeks Thursday tune and I didn’t want to do it a second time!!!!
Jeff Buckley? Know him? If you’re saying no right now…I bet you do. Hallelujah….no he didn’t write it but neither did kd lang or the 800 American Idols who cover it. Jeff Buckley covered the Leonard Cohen classic best (in my and many others opinions). But lots of people stop there – and there is way more to Jeff Buckley than that song. This week would have been his 44th birthday so he’s been on my mind and I’ve been playing his awesome album Grace over and over again. One song brings back many fond memories for me. I give you Lover You Should Have Come Over. Take a listen and then read my ultimate (and I think ONLY) cougar story after…
Four years ago, my friend Jen and I decided to hightail it to Cuba for some RnR. We picked a quiet resort – no nightclub – for the true purpose of relaxing, getting a tan and drinking mojitos. At the bar the first night, we nicknamed the place Shady Acres because we got hit on by a slew of men who could be our dads if not our grandpas. I did see a guy across the bar, sitting with this older woman. He was totally adorable and hot in a European looking kind of way. Jen saw me staring and looked over and basically said ‘ahh yeah no. He’s way too young for you.’ I couldn’t argue with her. An hour later he came over to us – sat down and starting talking. Cut the Euro thing – he was Canadian. We asked what he did and he said he was a musician. Jen threw her hands in the air, chugged her drink and said see ya later….and walked away. My friends know my weaknesses.
The next week was awesome – not going to lie. And every time he asked how old I was…I just smiled and said you really don’t want to know (and I really didn’t want to tell him). I didn’t want him to spend the whole week with the …. ‘hey when you were starting university, I was starting daycare’…kind of lines because god knows Jen and the other people at the resort were having a ball with that line of comparisons.
When we were leaving and having the big goodbye, he told me to get on the plane and listen to track 7 of Jeff Buckley’s Grace and think of him. You just listened to track seven. Can you judge me now for the cougar’ism? The kid has taste!
So now I always think of him when I hear that track and that week in Cuba…
Oh and the older woman…it was his mother. You can stop laughing now.
Annnnd – what about you and the vacation romance – cougar or not – any songs that remind you of someone special? Come on – you can tell me – I won’t tell anyone….

Just chiming in to say I love Jeff Buckley, too. And I love you for sharing the story– I’m a sucker for boys who appreciate (slightly!) older women and good music. Heh.
