It’s been a true family affair this week around our household. Everyone is pitching in to help look after the Boy and I. My sister flew in from Texas on Saturday because my other sister was going out of town on business for a few days. My brother, who also happens to work at my office, has been driving me home at night. It’s plus-plus-plus all around for Will – he is getting to see more of his Aunt and Uncle than usual – and I hope they’re enjoying that aspect too! I also see it as proof positive to what I’ve always said about siblings….you may not be best friends, you may not always even like each other, BUT when trouble arises, siblings (well mine anyways) will always be there for you. And I feel super, incredibly fortunate to be as well looked after as I am.
Then there is my sister Sherrill. She’s lived in Texas since I was about 13 I think! That’s a long time. The song that always makes me think of her – besides One Tin Soldier – is Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes.

Sara, this was a great post and it made me smile about my own family’s special songs. For Susannah, the song is ‘Super Stylin’ by Groove Armada. When I was about 22, I crashed for about a year on the futon at her studio apartment downtown. We would play this song full-blast and dance in front of the sliding glass balcony doors, watching our reflections. Too funny!
For my little sister, Telly, the song that reminds me of her is an oldie but a goodie – ‘Sweet Caroline.’ That’s her middle name (Caroline, not sweet!), and whenever I hear it, wherever I am, I think of her and try to call her so I can sing it loud and proud with her.
I love how a song can bring back such great memories of the people you love. And of course, making new memories is awesome too!

Whilst you were barfing while Suzanne was away, I got the benefit of another big sister in the house and I can not listen to Hall & Oates or J. Geils without thinking of her. As for my blood sisters, well that can be wrapped up in 4 letters… Y.M.C.A. village people! All 3 of us do the whole dance routine and still do!! The song for just for Karen and I.. don’t go breaking my heart.. kiki dee and Elton John! Classic!
Thanks for the memories Sara, hope you are healing well and fast!! Cheers!

HaHa…for my sister…who was a very precocious ‘almost teenager’ when I was eight years old… ‘Tell Laura I Love Her” and “Leader of the Pack”…It was the early days of the Beatles….motorcycles, leather jackets and boots…not that far removed from
the days of James Dean…There were a lot of love songs out where somebody died
and there was a huge tragedy!!!!
She used to start bawling her eyes out when she heard those songs while my brother and I watched wide-eyed thinking she was absolutely nuts…She still knows
all the words to those songs by heart!!
For some reason, German polka music reminds me of my brother as we used
to go to the Oktoberfests at university, drink and polka dance the night away… We told everyone we were twins and since we don’t look unalike, they believed us…
