This Song Reminds Me of Thursdays…..FAKE PLASTIC TREES

September 9, 2010 by Sara

Week 2 of the Song Reminds of series…and let’s take a trip overseas…both with the song and the memory for me.

This week – it’s the Radiohead classic – Fake Plastic Trees

*how about a version when they’re on Conan…before the whole Jay fiasco*

I first heard Radiohead when I went backpacking in Greece 1997.  I remember the year because I was at an insane backpackers on Corfu when we found out that Lady Di had been killed in a car accident.  I was way too old to be staying there…so while the younguns played some naked volleyball and licked booze off each other to mourn her passing, I sat by the beautiful ocean sort of stunned.  Two kiwi girls joined me and we instantly connected.  Bridget and Amanda and I would spend the next three weeks joined at the hip and terrorizing the Greek Islands.  God what a blast and way too many memories to list here.

ANYWAY – Fake Plastic Trees.  So, a week or so into the trip, we were joined by a friend of mine from Toronto.  One hungover morning, we ran to catch the ferry, hopped on and laydown to enjoy the trip.  Bridget lent me her Discman – stop laughing there were no mp3s then – and told me to listen.  It was The Bends and holy crap it was amazing.  So I’m enjoying the tunes and the scenery while the girls slept.  I got a tap on my shoulder and some dude was gesturing to me, speaking some foreign language and pointing to my friend Meg.  I look over and her backpack is teetering on the point of no return….her head on one end and the other end hanging over the side of the ferry…like close to going over (I mentioned we were hungover right).    So the two of us raced over to her – he held the bag and I woke her up.  And the backpack was saved…I actually recall her being enraged that we woke her…I personally would have been slightly more pissed had my bag been lost in the Aegean – but that’s just me.

You?  Any fond Radiohead memories???

donkeypath.jpgSidenote but it came too me and made me laugh…We stayed in a place on Santorini – with a view like this.  The donkey path went right underneath so if the breeze was in the wrong direction…well you get the picture.  BUT – it was $12 a night with all you could eat toast for breakfast.  I think I ate 15 a day….holy carb load…but what a steal!

First off, how amazing are they live?!?!?!
I’m fairly certain that I cried & mourned some (loser) breakup to this song. But that was the same summer I met my husband, so I very quickly appreciated that breakup!!
As far as Lady Di, I remember sitting on my Aunt’s bed with her & my cousin just crying & crying.
Sounds like Greece was quite an adventure!! I’m just a tad bit jealous!

Radiohead is the very best band to ever be.
    That is all.

Radiohead forever reminds me of my wife. We met in high school, and one of the things that attracted me to her was her uniqueness… she wasn’t like anyone else. And she loved Radiohead before anyone else seemed to know who they were. In university, her first room decor purchase was a Radiohead poster. I think we still have it in the basement, somewhere. Fake Plastic Trees reminds me of her.
And now, it reminds me of you too!
