This Song Reminds Me Of Thursdays – Pearl Jam!

December 14, 2010 by Sara

I’m two days early – but I’m sitting at my desk listening to my favourite radio station, WCLZ in Portland, Maine (I found it when I was on my therapy trip a few years ago) and a song came on and I had to share the story..because I love it.

The Song?  Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town by Pearl Jam.
My boyfriend at the time and I drove to Killington, Vermont one year on a ski trip.  On the way down we stopped at this side of the road motel because there was a good looking pub across the street.  That night we went in and loved it and the family that ran it so much, we left Killington a day early to go back.
Their fourteen year old son had downs syndrome and was working doing dishes in the kitchen.  He was the sweetest kid in the world.  When we came back and surprised them, he was there and wanted to dance.  So I gave him $5 for the jukebox and told him I’d dance to anything he picked.  He picked Elderly Woman 10 times in a row.  And he and I slow danced to it ten times in a row.  And it was the best part of that entire vacation and I think of him and his massive smile every time I hear that song.
**I’ve had the CRAP ASSIEST few days and that one song just put the biggest smile on my face with that memory.  That is the power of music!**

    Re: power of music.
I have a tiny black music note tattooed behind each ear. I don’t play any instruments and would never win a singing competition buuuuut music has always been there for me through good and bad times. Some songs remind me of major events, others can make me cry (any songs related to war), and others have me laughing or singing at the top of my lungs.
    Music truly is powerful!!!

OH SARA! What a great story. Gave me goosebumps.
Okay – next time you come over Sean and I will do this song for you. He plays guitar and I sing. I love this song and it’s one that we never fail to do at a campfire or a tipsy night in the garage.

A friend introduced me to Pearl Jam (Ten) back in residence in first year university. Thanks for sharing your story and reminding me of mine. And your picture of yummy Eddie Vedder!
