The catchy tune of Sweet Georgia Brown goes through my head every time I think of the Harlem Globetrotters – the most famous basketball team in the world. In the past few years we’ve taken our boys to their games and to say they love the experience is an understatement! They seem to be in awe with every move and what’s great is that this outing is way more affordable than taking a family of 4 to an NBA game. Their moves delight all ages and just the mere mention of this team has created such great conversation in multi-generations and cultures. Even Grandpa recalls great stars who have been part of the team in years past including Fred “Curly” Neal, George “Meadowlark” Lemon, and Wilt Chamberlain.
About 85 years ago a savvy business man Abe Saperstein formed a small basketball team in Chicago called the Savoy Big Five. They travelled across the U.S. with the purpose of promoting a new nightclub called the Savoy Ballroom. They soon became the Globetrotters as their popularity grew. Just before World War II, the Globetrotters signed on a great player named Reece “Goose” Tatum who changed the direction of this team with his amazing foot work and antics on the basketball court. Since then the team has travelled around the world delighting kids and adults combining skill and entertainment.
What’s new this year? The Harlem Globetrotters will bring their 2012 World Tour to Canada and will introduce newcomers including the remarkable 7 ft 8 rookie Paul “Tiny” Sturgess, the tallest pro basketball player, Jonte “Too Tall” Hall the shortest Globetrotter ever at 5 ft 2, and Fatima “TNT” Maddox the team’s first female player in 19 years.
The new Globetrotters also feature the top three finishers from the 2011 College Slam Dunk Contest. They will be joining the current roster stars Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang, Dizzy Grant, Scooter Christensen and many others. The North American part of the World Tour will bring the Globetrotter magic to over 230 cities in 46 U.S. states and five Canadian Provinces.

I grew up watching the Globetrotters on TV and laughed until my sides hurt. I would love for my daughters to experience this kind of clean, unique fun. The girls and I thought 2012 would be so much better than 2011, which involved huge problems with my ex-husband and many visits to court. So far, this has been ongoing. I would love for them to have this to look forward to.
