Snack time was in a bit of a rut around my household. Sliced apples (dipped in peanut butter if nobody was allergic), arrowroot cookies, sliced cucumber, granola bars. Ho hum, yawn, and BORING!
Last month, the folks at Tostitos launched their brand new colourful Tostitos Blue Corn tortilla chips, and treated my family to a basket of bright, fun munchies.
From your days of Thanksgiving centrepiece making, you know that there are different colours of corn, including white, yellow, red and blue! Tostitos Blue Corn tortilla chips are made with the blue corn (no artificial colours or flavours here).
Blue corn cobs have a grainer and coarser consistency than yellow corn, resulting in a much sweeter and “nuttier” flavour. It’s actually much more popular than you may have realized, and turns up ground into various flours, showing up in muffins, pancakes and many breakfast cereals.
These corn chips have the same nutritional value as other corn chips, but the splash of colour was enough to make snack time a little more exciting around our house. The kids loved the taste of the chips with salsa or melted cheese, and found the colour “cool”. The chips passed the dipping test quite well (they were sturdy enough to scoop a full scoop of salsa).
My husband and I enjoyed the corn chips with the Tostito Tomato Avocado Salsa recipe, which was basically:
1 jar salsa
1 diced medium avocado
1 Tbsp fresh lime juice
1 Tbsp olive oil
3 Tbsp freshly chopped cilantro
salt and pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients. Season to taste. Serve chilled (preferably on a beach) (with a cold beer) (by someone speaking Spanish). Ole!!!

Yum! I love tortilla chips! I will definitely have to try these chips with my 5 layer dip. I think I will mix the white and blue together to make things more interesting.

Yep – these are definitely yummy!!
Although my 3 yr was insistent that they were purple and not blue.
