Hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner! Of course my children are very excited and have been begging to put up the tree, but I am being the mean mommy and saying it has to wait until December 1.
I have always tried to instill good manners, and kindness in all of my children and every year we do various things that they can all participate in that helps not only to give back to the community but also helps teach them about certain social issues. I don’t want them thinking that the holidays are only about getting presents, candy and Santa Claus. There is so much more involved.
We participate in food and toy drives as a family and other events through their schools, but one thing that I started many years ago was selling crochet goods for various charities. For many years the money made through the sales of crochet stuffies, toys, poncho’s, blankies, mitts and hats has gone to Autism Canada, however this year a different charity has been chosen.
This year all monies earned will be going to help victims of domestic violence. There are thousands of women and children who depend on shelters each day and for many they will spend their first Holiday in one or maybe their fifth this season, doesn’t matter, help is needed.
Here is a picture of one of the hats I have made:
Do you and your family get into the spirit of giving and if so how?
Until next time,

I always take the kids to buy a new, unwrapped toy for toy mountain, and we participate in whatever is going on at their schools as well. I know we could do more, but at least they have some sense that the holiday is not all about getting presents for themselves.
