It is so important to have the chance to connect with other moms. The urbanmoms.ca team was lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in the Today’s Parent Baby and Toddler Show this past weekend at the Convention Centre in Toronto. We met and chatted with some amazing women and are really excited about all of the new urbanmoms.ca members who have come on board.
Having the opportunity to connect with urban moms reinforced the premise of this site. The idea of connection and friendship really hit home with a lot of these moms, many of them new to motherhood. Becoming a mom is often overwhelming with emotional extremes. Connecting with other moms who can relate to what you are going through is key to coping.
I spoke to this one woman at the Show who did not have children. She expressed how sick she was of hearing her new mom friends complain about how hard being a mom was and asked if urbanmoms.ca could help them get over it. After she left I asked one of the urbanmoms.ca team members if she thought we did that. We both agreed that if you don’t have kids it might appear that way. We love being moms. I know it is the most important thing I have ever done but it is also really hard! It changes everything. It is impossible to prepare for this and, from the outside, it may appear as though we are complaining but really, we just want to vent and be heard.
We also talked about how men often struggle to understand the impact becoming a mother has on a woman. One new mom said that sometimes she resents her husband going off to work and having the chance to interact with other adults. For the modern urban mom who has had an adult existence pre-children motherhood can rock your world! What about the woman I was before? She hasn’t dissappeared, yet everyone suddenly thinks of me as a mom and nothing else. However, dad is still the same guy – just with kids.
What I loved most about participating in the Show was the chance to connect with all of these amazing women. We are all so multi-faceted and diverse yet we are connected by the life-altering experience of becoming a mom. Regardless of age, income, or education urban moms felt an instant connection with urbanmoms.ca and the need to connect with other moms. We welcome all of you new moms to our virtual community and hope that you will share your thoughts and ideas to help enrich everyone’s experience at urbanmoms.ca.
