Seriously.
The little things.
All over my house.
I can’t tell you how many times Sean or I have had to bite our tongues to avoid swearing when we step on one of these – just a small sampling of the little things I am referring to:
Everything Eva plays with has to be small/miniature/tiny.
Now I really shouldn’t complain – she will play for ages with her little toys. She occupies herself which is nice although I wouldn’t mind a “Mommy will you play with me?” every now and then.
I love watching her make up scripts for them. Her imaginative play is fantastic. The things she does – we didn’t get to experience with Cuyler so I am relishing it with her. I could watch her for hours.
Cam has been obsessed with all things hockey from the time he could be, so his interest pretty much laid in mini sticks, carpet skates and goalie equipment. We love that Eva will get right in there and shoot the puck around with the boys, but if she had her druthers – she’d be with her little things.
Or with her collection of stuffies.
(Eva took this photo herself. This is about half of her stuffies)
The boys never bothered much with stuffies. Cuy has one or two webkinz he’s attached to, but she will also play and script with the stuffies for ages.
So I ask – is this a girl thing? The little critters, creatures and dolls…do all little girls like little toys?
How long will this go on for? We haven’t really gotten into Polly Pockets or Littlest Pet Shop Not looking forward to whenever that time comes.
I hate to gender stereotype – but the difference between raising boys and girls is definite. Especially where toys are concerned. At least in our house.
What’s it like at your house?

My bro told me about this site just today. Great blog you’ve got!

I have 2 girls, 4 & 2….I cannot tell you how many Barbie shoes, littlest pet shop and polly pocket things I step on every day. My poor vacuum cleaner…
The best is when they can’t find the miniature tea cup that came with the miniature Cinderella and expect Mommy to find amongst the chaos…

Ah yes.
Life in miniature. Its pretty cute really and I can relate to your tale.
I like my kids having small things to play with. I’m not really into big dolls and figures like Barbies.
We have a small apartment too so with my son liking Lego and my daughter into Calico Critters I have to check the vaccuum cleaner regularly.
Cheers

Meghann – I KNOW – 8 years! Where did that go? It sounds so old.
Kath & Erin I guess it’s tough to make that comparison with just girls – but yours are into “tiny” as well. Interesting.
Lorie – your right about the Tech Deck, and dirtbikes. My oldest also likes flick tricks – those pieces are beyond tiny. Luckily he prefers to play with them outside so he’s got a little rubbermaid bin he keeps in the garage for them!

Your story made me laugh and smile. I have three boys and my house is full of tiny toys and stuffed animals! I have no girls to compare to though. The difference, I would assume is that our little things are dirtbikes, tech-deck and various superheroes. Our latest addition is remote control Mario Karts that aren’t more than an inch long – so you think you’ve missed stepping on it and then “zip” the boys turn that little remote and crush there’s another toy that has fallen vitim to our feet. I suspect you, like my husband and I, walk around with bruised soles from our many “accidents”. We aren’t always successful with toning down the cussing – evidenced by my 3-year-old muttering “damn it”!

My girls love the tiny things too. The tinier the better. The imaginative play with them is truly amazing to watch.
We also struggle not to swear when we step on them, and we aren’t always successful with the suppression. If you find a way to contain them, let me know!

Well. I have just the two girls, but we have lots and lots and lots of little things. Maddy is really into Calico Critters, and they’re really small! And Charlotte has a stuffy collection that is about 10X more than Eva’s. Plus, my girls also love lego so I’m always either stepping on or vacuuming up (god forbid) some tiny little irreplaceable part!
But the imaginative play…I love to observe that, too.
Wait ’till Eva’s old enough to start making up plays with her friends. That is totally cute (although painful to watch at times!)

The fun for me, is we have two boys AND two girls, so we have all the little girly toys AND all the legos.
I’m not sure when the girls grow out of the “tons of little girly toys that are carried around the house in bags” stage. Lindsay will be 8 in November, (can you believe the November kids are turning EIGHT?!) and she’s still into it too.
Christine says
Ohhhh right!! I forgot about LEGO!
Neither of the boys were ever interested in lego or duplo…

R U KIDDING ME! You should see the thousands of legos on my floor on any given day! Elise NEVER played with the small toys! Ethan has from the start! He loves his little guys/men/legos/people/anything!
