the little black dress

November 14, 2007 by Unknown

Next week, my company is having a holiday party. The first annual. Usually, they only do a Children’s Christmas party. It’s always a movie – this year it’s Enchanted – and it’s always at the beginning of December. This year, however, they decided to make all adult-only party too. I’m looking forward to it (even if the drinks are not free. boo to cash bars.)

but i have NOTHING to wear.

i swear. nothing. i’m going to have to go this party naked, i think.

i do have one possibility. this one.

but there’s the slight issue of le pooch. and the dress is probably, erm, 6 years old. i want to wear something new. and more trendy. also…this picture was taken when i had only a little belly, and no boobs. my body is soo different now.

so i went to stores. many, many stores in search of a little black dress.

my first stop was Jacob, where they had all sorts of lovely little numbers. this was my favorite (in black, of course)

there was only one problem. i normally wear a size 2. pretty much exclusively. occasionally, i’ll buy pants in a 4, or a skirt in a 0, but i’m DEFINITELY a 2. so, i took a 1/2 and a 3/4 into the dressing room. and i couldn’t zip it. so, i asked the saleslady if she could kindly get me the 5/6 to try on.

and when i couldn’t even get that zipper up past my midsection, i gave up and walked out of the store.

then i tried my go-to store, RW&Co. where i tried on every single dress you see here. and not one of them fit. the ones that fit in the body were too big in the bust. the ones that fit in the bust her buckling in the back.

i tried every store in 2 malls. and came up with NOTHING.

i’m convinced my body is NOT meant to wear dresses.

please help! i’d hate to have to show up to this thing in the nude.

do you have a perfect little black dress? what does it look like? where did you get it? have you seen any great dresses in the mall recently? where? have you ever had issues getting into dresses in your normal size?? (please say yes, please say yes, please say yes)

Ali, Usually I have a hell of a time trying to find the “perfect little black dress” Well I guess the black dress gods were shining upon me this year. I not only found 1 but 2!!!!!! Le Chateau has some really cute numbers and Laura has beautiful dresses. I’m sure the “boys” of Scholastic wouldn’t mind if you came nude to the party!!!!! Good Luck and God Speed!!!!
PS check out my Facebook Profile under photo albums and you can see the dress I got at Laura!!!

    You look amazing!
Try MEXX. I love shopping there. My little black dress isn’t super dressy but I do love it:) I also have one I love from winners but it’s more of a summer thing:)
    Good luck!

I had a situation with a wedding where I didn’t want to wear the same black dress I’d been wearing for years. I was going to buy a new one when my friend suggested I just accessorize better. IE – added gold to it. Gold bracelet, earrings, purse and shoes and I even had a nice beige pashmina that went well. In writing it sounds a bit overkill but it was actually all quite subtle and it got a lot of compliments. I’d recommend that instead of buying something you don’t love in the end. I’m sure the dress probably still looks great on you. But that’s my humble opinion.

omg! i’ve scoured the malls for dresses and left sobbing. even cried in the yorkdale bathroom. my size?? where do i begin. I’ve been everything from a 4 to a 14 in the last ten years, so it’s always a guessing game when i walk into a dressing room. anything with a waist, given the state of my stomach after 2 babies (god knows what it’s going to be like after #3) and I’m up a few sizes. Anything tunic-y or empire waisted and I’m down a few sizes because i have no boobs. you will find something great – just persevere! you look AWESOME, i just saw you last weekend, and you were GLOWING and BUFF. My go-to place is H&M – I’ll often find something there when all else fails. Depending on how much you want to spend, Kitsch boutique on Lonsdale is great and really only carries dresses.

My favourite little black dress is from Old Navy and is probably about 4 years old. Think Marilyn Monroe’s famous white dress, only black. I have worn that thing with a pregnant bump, with nursing boobs and in my regular shape and have always felt great in it.

Try Banana Republic! I’m not a dress girl either but I found one here, it’s one of those wrap styles that fit pretty good!

You looked awesome in that black dress!
6 months post-baby I’m still hiding the pooch. I swear the best trick is all about the roushing (sp?). Just got a great little black dress – hides the pooch – accentuates the rest. You are more than welcome to borrow it! It’s from a little store called Blush in the plaza outside of Vaughan Mills. Once you find a great little black dress you’re set! Good luck and have a great time at the party!

Oh, this one’s easy. Buy the dress of your dreams and get yourself a tailor! If it fits in some areas but is a little big in others, they can take it in. It’s so worth it–you’ll look and feel amazing because the dress will have a custom fit.
