I’m a sucker for a good slice of pizza – it could be old fashioned Italian Neapolitan, or a thin crust NY pizza, or even a pizza bagel at home. I’m not a huge fan of some of the larger chains who make doughy, flavourless pies, but on any given day I could pound back my weight in pizza if it makes the mark.
So what is the best pizza I’ve ever eaten? Sadly I do not have ANY Canadian pizza on the list – but I’m open to suggestions!
- Piazza della Signoria, Italy
After I finished University I went for a trip to Italy and Switzerland with my dad. We ate at so many great places, and tried so much amazing food. The one that really stands out though is the pizza I had outside the Pallazo Vecchio in Florence. There are a number of pizza places in the Piazza della Signoria, and I’ll be darned if I can remember which one we settled on… but I still dream of that mouth-watering pizza pie.
- John’s Pizzeria, Bleeker Street, New York
Yes, Bleeker Street is a little bit overhyped, but there is no kidding around when it comes to the pizza at John’s. Available only by the pie, it is everything you want in a New York pizza. Coal fired, each slice wears its char-markings like a proud scar. The cheese is ooey-gooey delicious, and does not dissapoint one bit. The graffiti adorning the walls, chairs and floor are all part of its 80-year old charm.
- Varasano’s Pizzeria, Atlanta
Owner Jeff Varasano spent ten years (yes, ten!) scouring the planet to perfect his pizza recipe. The result is some of the most extroadinary pizza this side of the pond. His Margherita pizza is as basic as pizza can be, but blows the roof off anything else you might find outside of Italy.
- Fritti, Atlanta
Go figure, another Atlanta pizzeria… Fritti prides itself on its authentic Italian ingredients and certified Pizza Napoletana. Cooked in a searing wood burning oven these perfect pies could be sold without any toppings at all. However, Fritti offers a wide variety of delectable untraditional toppings like lemon slices, aged balsamic vinegar, and seafood. - My Own Homemade Grilled Pizza
- A while back I learned how to make grilled pizza from Bobby Flay. It is still some of the best pizza I’ve ever tried. The dough is grilled directly on the BBQ grates, and makes for the most delicious flaky-on-the-outside yet chewy-on-the-inside pizza crust around. The link has one example of toppings I like to use – but this pizza is all about the crust, and I’ve tried various toppings, all with great success.

You can check out the recipe here: http://grillinterrupted.com/?p=1558
Honestly though, any toppings on the grill make for a fabulous pizza!

Gav,
When was the last time you had an IL FORNELLO pizza? We have tweaked our recipe and topping combinations. I’d love to treat you to one to see if it meets your standards.
Just email me and let me know where to send a voucher and the location you’d like to go to.
We think our pizzas are great, so I’d love for you to try them – again

recipe please??

Hmmm… I’ve tried both. Not a big fan of Il Fornello, and while Pizzaioli is ok… it’s not winning any awards in my books.

Pizzaioli or Il Fornello in Toronto. Both make great pizzas. Il Fornello uses a wood oven, so delicious.
