You know the one?
There’s no place like home.
We moved into our new place this past Friday. It was a harried day and we paid our movers for 10 hours of work instead of the 6 hours we estimated we would need them for. We didn’t get our key until 4:30pm.
But we got in and got to work. My mom was pretty much my savior this weekend as she packed away the kitchen in our old place and turned our new kitchen from this:
I was able to get the kids bedrooms set up for them. Sean’s dad puttered around doing odd jobs that needed done but we didn’t have time for. My dad came by and entertained Eva and Sean’s mom took Cuyler for a ride when the weather started raise his anxiety. And it’s just been the weather that’s heightened his anxiety. The move was smooth for him. He loves it here. All of their school friends live in our direct area.
There is an immense feeling of peace being here. I walked Cuyler home from school on Friday (Cam rode his bike) and it just felt like we are where we are supposed to be.
We haven’t seen a whole lot of Cam – he’s been out with his friends all day everyday.
Within an hour or two of us being here the little girl across the road came over and invited Cuyler over for a popsicle. He went and they sat on the grass together. She took good care to ensure he crossed back safely.
He already has a place here. I couldn’t be happier.
It’s funny – we just moved out of a huge house, with a massive backyard.
And I miss nothing about it. There is something to be said about simplicity. This is a very simple house. But it is absolutely perfect. Perfect for our family. I want to raise my kids here. In this home.
The most fascinating part of this entire move? Brace yourself…
The house facing us has a 3 year old boy with autism.
The house next to that 3 yr old boy – has a 7 year old boy with autism.
Right around the bend on this street, a family with 2 boys (13 and 10 I believe) with autism.
Including Cuyler – that is 5 boys on our street with autism.
Talk about having a place in the neighbourhood…
There are 3 other mothers – on my street – who “know” exactly what I go through everyday.
Have sat in that dr’s office hearing those words “Your child has autism”.
Have scoured the internet looking for anything that might help.
Have had to deal with the public and it’s scrutiny.
Have had to deal with the public and it’s scrutiny.
I don’t know if they know each other, but I plan on knowing all of them.
I am hoping that all of us knowing each other will make the journey a little easier.
Home sweet home.
Indeed.
