Join UrbanMoms as we discuss being active and making healthy choices in the “life is good” blog series sponsored by Nesquik.
At a time when most Canadian children may not be getting the calcium
and other essential nutrients they need, delicious milk – like chocolate
milk made with Nesquik – is just a good idea.
I love that I have a sporty kid.
He wants to try everything. He’s pretty good at everything he tries.
He’s been on skates since just before he turned 2.
He’s been on skates since just before he turned 2.
He played lacrosse at 4 (ahem..not my choice). He stopped at 6. He’s not a big kid and the hitting was unnerving me.
He played 2 years of soccer.
He’s played rep hockey since he was 6. Three years as a goalie. Last year as a forward and next year as a forward.
He played spring roller hockey for 2 years.
The first year he played with 9-12yr olds. He was 8.
Every summer he’s been on a 3 on 3 hockey team.
Last year he played house league baseball. At the end of the season he tried out for rep baseball and made the team.
Together with him, we decided that he would withdraw from the team and just play house league.
Cam loves sports and he needs to be involved in something. He is constantly moving; riding a bike, on his roller blades, practicing pitching, playing soccer in the street, volleyball in the street. I never want him to lose that energy and love of sports and activity.

I think they key is not pushing him. And knowing what his – and our family – limits are.
I know many families whose kids are on the ice 12 months out of the year. We’ve done it in the past. I just think it’s so important for him to also be kid. To have fun. Especially in the summer. To not have to leave a friends game of road hockey for hockey practice. Or to leave a backyard pool party for a 3 on 3 game.
This year we decided not to have him play any spring sports. No spring hockey. No roller hockey. We also decided that he would not play 3 on 3 this summer.
Just house league baseball.
This has been a very sound decision for us.
Each diamond he plays at has a great park beside it. Perfect for Cuyler and Eva.
That’s family time.

We have every weekend wide open. Did you hear me?? EVERY WEEKEND!!
The freedom – oh the freedom!
I feel like we have the perfect balance this summer. Cam is involved in a team sport with friends. He is able to to focus and and build on his skills, show respect for the game and fellow teammates.
But more importantly he will be able to spend his summer as a 10 year old little boy.

Can’t wait to join you in the fun. We do keep it busy (one kid busy) during the school year but Scott and I also get activities that we choose! Our rec time is important to us and we hope it models commitment to taking care of ourselves to her. Marley will have piano, dance and swimming in the fall. I’m loving Zumba and Yoga and Scott gets his Tai Chi night. Any local Zumba?
