Sweetheart Treats

February 2, 2010 by Lisa_Mommed

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I like to be prepared to get a bunch of baking, crafts and sweets on the go. One of my favourite treats to indulge myself and my loved ones with is chocolate covered strawberries.

They are so impressive and yet so easy to prepare. The list of ingredients is simple:
  • fresh, ripe strawberries (not always easy to find in February, but not impossible either)
  • dark, milk or white chocolate
  • parchment paper

Wash strawberries and pat dry, leaving stems and leaves intact. Strawberries should be completely dry before proceeding with the recipe.

Melt chocolate in a microwavable bowl, using the Defrost setting (or 10% power) or in a double boiler on the stove on low heat. Heat for 90 seconds, then stir; repeat until the chocolate has just melted and can be stirred smoothly. Chocolate burns very easily, so be sure to keep a close eye on it.

Hold a strawberry by the stem and dip it into the melted chocolate. Withdraw the strawberry and swirl it in a tight circle to spin off excess chocolate. Place the chocolate dipped strawberry on the parchment paper and set aside to cool until the chocolate is hardened. Repeat with the remainder of the strawberries, reheating chocolate for a short time, if necessary.

You’ll want to serve these treats as soon as possible – preferably on the same day you make them. But do yourself the favour of trying this recipe out first before the big day. It gives you the chance to perfect the technique while also tasting the delicious results.

Chocolate covered strawberries are such a great treat. But don’t stop there because you can dip so many other great foods in chocolate. I like to skewer marshmallows then dip them in chocolate, while the chocolate is still wet I roll them in sprinkles. Pretzels are also amazing dipped in chocolate (don’t forget to drizzle with white chocolate). An assortment of dried fruit also works well!

I love chocolate dipped strawberries! They are so delicious and so beautiful. Definitely a great Valentine’s Day Treat, one even my husband should be able to master.
