I’ve posted a few times about the running program I’ve been doing with 2 buddies.
I cannot imagine doing the program without them. I’m actually certain that I wouldn’t have finished it, much less finished on schedule if it weren’t for them.
Since the beginning of July we have arranged schedules to accommodate our running days.
I forget how, but our theme became “Rockstars”. I even had a running shirt with a big silver star bedazzled on it (really…it’s not as tacky as it sounds).
We encouraged one another when we didn’t feel like going out.
We encouraged each other when we didn’t think we could finish a run.
We walked with each other when we couldn’t finish a run.
We would do body checks throughout each run that went something like this:
“How’s everybody feeling? Feet? Ankles? Calves? Quads? Hamstings? Relax your shoulders. Breath in for 3, out for 3…”
“How’s everybody feeling? Feet? Ankles? Calves? Quads? Hamstings? Relax your shoulders. Breath in for 3, out for 3…”
I did several runs on my own which I really enjoyed and am glad I was able to do by myself. Now I know I can run on my own and enjoy it, but I missed the company of my buddies during the program
We would remind each other to slow down when we were going uphill and to go gently downhill.
We finished every single run with high 5’s all around.
We would stretch it out at the end of each run. And end up chatting for way longer than we meant to.
We would get home and see who would post first on the Couch-to-5K facebook fanpage.
And yesterday. We ran our last run of the program.
We graduated.
We were psyched to get out there and pound the pavement.
And pound it we did. Each one of us had a great run. No stopping. No pain.
So we did what any good athlete would do.
We pulled out a bottle of booze to celebrate our accomplishment.
(*note – bottle was already near empty – we did not crush it)
And then my friend Kim (right) handed Kelly (middle) and I one of these each that she had made up herself:
And that is how you reach a goal you set for yourself, people.
With good friends supporting you.
We were proud of ourselves for finishing, but realized as we were throwing back our shots that we didn’t just finish something. We started something. This program was just a kick start to get us off our butts and moving. Now the real running starts.
And we have our first official 5K next month.
And if I can kick my chocolate habit I may just be able to shed those 10 extra pounds of baby weight (said “baby” being 3 and a half years old…)

*sniff, sniff* Awesome post. Almost can’t believe it’s about us. A story you’d read about some other sorority of women. Nope, WE earned every km, every sore foot, ankle, calf and knee. We owned it, pushed past it and graduated to the other side. This side starts at 5K 3x a week. WE ARE ROCK STARS!

What an awesome blog post! You totally captured the feelings that I had about our program too! It really is just the beginning, though… I’m looking forward to tomorrow and our increased distances!
