Two more days till Christmas! I can’t believe I’m saying this…but I, the grinch, am actually looking forward to it! So is Will. Truth be told though, we’re taking my friend’s dog for an overnight on Christmas and he’s almost more excited about that!
But…I will say, being a single parent at Christmas has a couple new challenges now that Will knows who Santa is and what the gig is all about.
Will keeps asking what I asked Santa for. And we have two stockings. Someone needs to fill mine – and that would be me. So…I went to Target last weekend and stocked up on some toiletries and I’ll be wrapping them up and then unwrapping them on Christmas. And what did I ask Santa for? A blow-dryer. Did you know that the elves make kick ass blow-dryers. Yup – so I’ll be opening that one on Christmas morning.
I’m also taking the time to learn how my timer works on my camera so on Christmas morning – I may be able to actually get a family shot of us …in our new jammies, opening our stockings. That would be novel.
Do you get presents from Santa? Stockings? I always hesitate to make up new ‘rules’ – you know like Santa only brings presents for kids….(or the whole ‘no live animals on the sleigh debacle)…I want to keep him believing as long as possible!

We don’t do adult stockings from Santa, or gifts. We don’t even exchange gifts as adults anymore (we moved to name drawing, to present stealing, to nothing- and I’m good with that).
Also, we’ve only had our own family Christmas once. And frankly, it felt weird. Every other year it’s been with my parents and sibling(s), spouses and families. It may not be on Christmas day, but that’s when Santa comes. I guess that gig will be up when they figure out time, but for now it works.
Have a great Christmas Sara! I’m looking forward to seeing you in January!

Tracey – The Elves write the tags for Santa because he’s so busy (aka – I write them with my left hand). I am stretching out one last year with Cam and he’d know mine and Sean’s printing or writing…
*sigh* it does take more work

When Sean and I first kids one of the things we had to decide on was whether or not Santa even wrapped presents. Santa gifts were wrapped for Sean growing up, but not for me. So we decided to wrap – it’s just more fun.
But be sure that Santa’s wrapping paper isn’t found when he’s a little older.
I received presents from Santa up until I got married.
Santa doesn’t leave presents for Sean and I but he does fill our stockings.

I wrap things for Martin from Santa… I think he does the same for me, but honestly, we’re often both so tired after the whole-night-o-wrapping, no one seems to care. Also, the kids didn’t notice before this, but now that Oliver is actually older and getting wiser about this whole Santa-thing, I feel I need to use exercise more care – I have to at least wrap all the Santa presents in the same paper for everyone… and possibly even use a different pen for the tags – he’s noticing details more and more, I think.
Merry Christmas, lady!! I know you and Will will celebrate your best Christmas together yet – enjoy everything!! I send you loads of love. xoxox

I’ve been wondering about the stocking thing myself. My son is only 2 so he doesn’t completely grasp whats going to happen yet. As a single mom myself, I don’t want to go out and buy stuff for myself little things for the stocking, so I have decided to tell my son Santa just comes to little boys and girls and animals. Have fun this Christmas, I’m sure now that Will understands, Christmas morning will be so much fun for you!

of course I still get gifts from Santa (or Mrs. Claus..I think she actually knows more) 😉 Merry Xmas!

Santa always came to visit me, even when I was an adult. My Dad’s favourite time of year was Christmas and Santa was part of the magic. I would put out a peanut butter sandwich and a Coke and it the morning it would be gone and all of our stockings would be filled. Dad would giggle as we opened everything and if we tried to thank him he would say “I had nothing to do with it, those are from Santa”.
Now that I have kids I continue the tradition. My youngest is starting to ask questions but as I told her Santa is the magic of Christmas and if we believe in good things and spirit of Christmas, then Santa is real. We will always put out a plate of cookies and milk, will always have filled stockings and we always will speak of Santa as if he was real – no matter what age my children are.
Enjoy your Christmas. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
