Roman has recently learned how to press buttons to open doors. He can now reach the handicapped access buttons to open the doorways to our underground parking and also the elevator call button. It has become a little routine when we come and go he gets to open the doors by pushing the buttons along our route. He loves this new found power and delights how the doors open for him.
This new skill recently backfired on an outing with his Papa. Roman, Papa and I were in search of a bathroom at an Art Gallery and could only find a handicapped one off the main hall. Roman loves to go into the bathroom with you so he can wash his hands, play with the paper towels and all the other delights toddlers find in a public bathroom. In he went with Papa while I waited in the hall for them. What we didn’t think of is that in certain handicapped bathrooms there is a BIG silver button on the wall to open the bathroom door from the inside and once you push that button the door opens and will not close until it has timed out. Allowing plenty of time to exit in a wheelchair. There is no stall in the single bathroom just the sink and the throne. Do you see where this is going?
Papa had sat down to do his business rendering him helpless and Roman used his new skill to press the big silver button. The door opens revealing a helpless Papa still sitting on the potty. I am sitting in the hall within view to see this unfold. Papa and I make eye contact, between fits of laughter I try to shut the door manually but it won’t budge until it’s timed out so for what seems like eternity my poor Dad is exposed still seated. I try to block the view and pray that a tour doesn’t walk by. Roman is so proud of his accomplishment, I am doubled over in laughter and dear ole Dad is not in a position to do much but wait it out until the door closes itself.
Have you had experienced any public exposure at the hands of your toddler?

Man, every time I’m in a public washroom with one of my kids, I’m practically SHRIEKING at them not to touch the latch on the door… it’s so tempting to them, of course… ack!!
